3 Weeks in Vietnam 2026: Extended North to South Itinerary

· 4 min read Itinerary
Ha Giang mountain pass in Vietnam

Three weeks allows for the full north-to-south route with meaningful time at each stop, plus one or two detours into the highlands or islands. The itinerary below adds Sapa (or Ha Giang), Ninh Binh, Phong Nha, and Da Lat to the two-week core. For a trip of this length, travel insurance is genuinely worth having — EKTA covers medical expenses, cancellations, and motorbike-related incidents (check the policy exclusions if you plan to self-ride the Ha Giang Loop).

Overview

Best approached as: Fly into Hanoi, fly out of HCMC (or vice versa for the south-first approach). An open-jaw flight is the most efficient structure — compare fares with Aviasales which aggregates low-cost and full-service carriers across both directions. Core route: Hanoi → northern highlands detour → Ninh Binh → Phong Nha → Hue → Da Nang/Hoi An → Da Lat → HCMC → Mekong Delta or Phu Quoc.

Day 1–3: Hanoi

Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Temple of Literature. Day 3: day trip to the Perfume Pagoda or a motorbike exploration of the countryside west of Hanoi.

Day 4–6: Sapa OR Ha Giang (choose one)

Sapa route: Overnight train from Hanoi to Lao Cai (8 hours), bus to Sapa (1 hour). Two days of trekking to Hmong and Red Dao villages in the Muong Hoa Valley. Return by overnight train to Hanoi. Total: 3 days including travel.

Ha Giang route: Overnight bus from Hanoi to Ha Giang (6–7 hours). 3 days on the Ha Giang Loop by motorbike — the Dong Van Karst Plateau UNESCO Geopark, Ma Pi Leng Pass, and minority villages. Return by overnight bus. Total: 4–5 days. Better for experienced motorbike riders; more dramatic scenery than Sapa but requires more time.

For a 3-week itinerary, Ha Giang works if the northern highlight is the priority. Sapa works if trekking with a guide is preferred.

Day 7–8: Ha Long Bay or Cat Ba Island

Two nights. Either a 2-day/1-night classic Ha Long cruise, or 2 nights on Cat Ba Island using it as a base for Lan Ha Bay day trips. The Cat Ba option gives more flexibility and avoids the cruise boat format.

Day 9: Ninh Binh

Day trip from Hanoi (2 hours south) or as a transit stop. Trang An boat trip (₫200,000 / $8), Bich Dong Pagoda, Mua Cave viewpoint. 5–6 hours is enough. Continue south by evening bus or train.

Day 10: Travel to Phong Nha

From Hanoi or Ninh Binh, either bus direct to Phong Nha village (9–10 hours from Hanoi via the tourist bus operators) or train to Dong Hoi and taxi/bus (30 minutes). Arrive evening.

Day 11–12: Phong Nha

Two days. Day 11: Paradise Cave (₫350,000) and cycling the Bong Lai Valley. Day 12: Dark Cave (₫450,000 — zip line entry, mud cave, kayaking) and the Phong Nha River boat to the cave entrance (₫250,000). Optional: day trip on the Ho Chi Minh Road by motorbike toward the DMZ sites.

Day 13: Phong Nha to Hue

Tourist bus direct to Hue (2–3 hours). Arrive afternoon.

Day 14–15: Hue

Imperial Citadel, royal tombs (Khai Dinh and Tu Duc are the highlights), Thien Mu Pagoda. Day 15: DMZ day trip north (Vinh Moc tunnels, Khe Sanh Combat Base) or Bach Ma National Park day hike.

Day 16: Hai Van Pass to Hoi An

Drive or bus via Hai Van Pass and the Marble Mountains. Arrive Hoi An late afternoon.

Day 17–18: Hoi An

Ancient Town, An Bang Beach, cooking class, and one evening for the Lantern Festival (if timing allows the full moon date).

Day 19: Da Lat (fly or bus)

VietJet or Vietnam Airlines from Da Nang to Da Lat (1 hour). Alternatively, the bus from Hoi An via Nha Trang to Da Lat is 8–10 hours — doable but long.

Day 20–21: Da Lat

Crazy House, Bao Dai Palace, coffee farm visit at Cau Dat, night market eating, and one morning hike toward Lang Biang Mountain (if time allows). Fly or bus to HCMC on Day 21.

Extension options (if time remains)

Mekong Delta: 2 nights in Can Tho, dawn Cai Rang Floating Market, Phong Dien by bicycle, canal boat tour. Day trip to Vinh Long/An Binh Island. Return by bus to HCMC.

Phu Quoc: Fly from HCMC (45 minutes). 2–3 nights for Sao Beach, An Thoi island hopping, and diving. Fly back to HCMC for the international departure.
