1 Week in North Vietnam 2026: Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Sapa

· 3 min read Itinerary
Hoan Kiem Lake, Hanoi

One week in north Vietnam can cover Hanoi, Ha Long Bay (or Cat Ba Island), and one highland destination — either Sapa or Ninh Binh. Ha Giang requires more time to do properly; a one-week northern itinerary that includes Ha Giang will feel rushed.

The core choice: Sapa or Ninh Binh

Sapa: More dramatic scenery (rice terraces, 3,143m Fansipan), trekking with Hmong and Red Dao guides, overnight train each way (8 hours). Best for landscape and trekking.

Ninh Binh: 2 hours by bus from Hanoi, boat tours through limestone karsts (Trang An), accessible as a day trip or one-night stop. Best for travellers who prefer not to spend two nights on a train.

The itinerary below uses Sapa. Substitute Ninh Binh (Day 4–5) if the overnight train is not preferred.

Day 1–2: Hanoi

Arrive Hanoi. Day 1: Old Quarter orientation — Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple, evening at a bia hoi corner (corner with plastic stools, fresh beer, street food). Day 2: Ho Chi Minh Complex (Mausoleum, Ba Dinh Square, Ho Chi Minh’s stilt house, One Pillar Pagoda), Temple of Literature, French Quarter architecture, West Lake sunset at Tay Ho Quan.

Stay: Hoan Kiem District (Old Quarter). 2 nights.

Day 3: Ha Long Bay or Cat Ba

Option A — 2-day/1-night Ha Long cruise: Depart Hanoi by bus 07:30–08:00. Board cruise at noon. Afternoon kayaking and cave visits (Thien Cung or Sung Sot). Overnight on the boat. Day 4 morning: sunrise, tai chi, return to Ha Long by 12:00. Back in Hanoi by 18:00.

Option B — Cat Ba Island: Bus from Hanoi to Cat Ba (4 hours, ₫250,000). One night on Cat Ba. Day 4: kayaking or boat trip in Lan Ha Bay (fewer boats, calmer). Return to Hanoi Day 4 evening. More independent but requires more logistics.

Day 5: Hanoi rest/prepare — evening: night train to Lao Cai

Spend the day at leisure or do a Hanoi street food walk. Evening: board the overnight train (SE7 or LP3) from Hanoi to Lao Cai (departs approximately 21:00–22:00). Arrive Lao Cai 06:00.

Book in advance: The soft sleeper compartments (4-berth) on this route fill up 2–3 weeks ahead in peak season.

Day 6: Sapa trekking

Arrive Lao Cai 06:00. Bus to Sapa (1 hour). Check in, then immediately head out with a guide. A half-day trek to Cat Cat village or the full-day Muong Hoa Valley circuit takes in Hmong villages, terraced rice fields (best May–June for flooding, September–October for harvest), and valley views.

Guide: Hire a Hmong guide in Sapa town (₫200,000–400,000 / $8–16 per day). The trail context is significantly better with a guide who can introduce you to villages.

Stay: Sapa town. 1 night.

Day 7: Sapa to Hanoi

Morning: second trek or freeform exploration of the valley below Sapa. Afternoon bus to Lao Cai. Evening train back to Hanoi (departs approximately 20:00–21:00, arrives 05:00–06:00 next morning). This is a sleeper return — you wake up in Hanoi ready for a connecting flight.

Practical notes

Train booking: Book Hanoi–Lao Cai trains via the Vietnam Railways website (dsvn.vn) or through a booking agent. Soft sleeper berths: ₫350,000–550,000 ($14–22) each way.

Ha Long cruise booking: Book 1–3 days in advance through any Hanoi travel agent or hostel. Budget operators: ₫1,200,000–2,000,000 ($48–80) for 2-day/1-night. Mid-range: ₫2,500,000–4,500,000 ($100–180).

Weather: The north has a genuine cool season (December–February) and a wet season (May–September with frequent afternoon storms). The terraces look best in September–October (harvest gold) and May–June (flooded green mirrors). December–February in Sapa can be cold (under 10°C at night) — bring layers.
