10 Days in Central Vietnam 2026: Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang and Da Lat

· 3 min read Itinerary
Hoi An Ancient Town

Central Vietnam has the country’s most concentrated historical and landscape variety — the imperial capital at Hue, the UNESCO trading port at Hoi An, the world’s largest cave system at Phong Nha, and the highland city of Da Lat within a 400km stretch. Ten days is enough to cover it properly.

Day 1–2: Phong Nha

Arrive by tourist bus from Hanoi (9–10 hours) or fly to Dong Hoi and transfer. Two days in the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. Day 1: Paradise Cave (7km of illuminated cavern, ₫350,000) and a cycle of the Bong Lai Valley. Day 2: Dark Cave experience (zip line entry, mud bath, kayaking, ₫450,000) and the Phong Nha River boat to the cave mouth.

Optional: Ho Chi Minh Road motorbike day toward the DMZ.

Day 3: Phong Nha to Hue

Tourist bus (2–3 hours, ₫150,000–250,000). Arrive late morning. Afternoon: Thien Mu Pagoda by boat on the Perfume River, evening bun bo Hue on Bach Dang street.

Day 4–5: Hue

Day 4: Imperial Citadel (₫200,000, 3–4 hours), afternoon Dong Ba Market and a food tour of the local dishes. Day 5: Royal tombs — Khai Dinh (mosaic interior, 15km south) and Tu Duc (garden retreat). Afternoon: hire a motorbike or bicycle and explore the Citadel moat circuit and the south bank restaurants.

Optional day trip: DMZ sites 60km north — Vinh Moc Tunnels (₫60,000) and Khe Sanh Combat Base.

Day 6: Hai Van Pass to Da Nang

Hire a motorbike or arrange a transfer via the old Hai Van Pass road (do not take the tunnel — the pass road is the attraction). The 496m summit has views of both Da Nang Bay and Lang Co lagoon. Stop at the fort on the summit (French and American military history). Descend into Da Nang.

Afternoon: Marble Mountains, Thuy Son (₫40,000 entry) — limestone outcrops with caves, temples, and a summit view over My Khe Beach. Check into Da Nang or continue to Hoi An (30km south).

Day 7–8: Hoi An

Two full days. Day 7: Ancient Town morning (₫120,000 combined ticket), Japanese Covered Bridge, Fujian Assembly Hall, Tan Ky Merchant House. Afternoon An Bang Beach. Day 8: cooking class (Morning Glory’s market tour and cooking session is the standard recommendation) and the Lantern Festival evening if the full moon timing aligns.

Optional: Day trip to My Son Cham Sanctuary (50km west, ₫200,000–400,000 on an organised tour).

Day 9: Hoi An to Da Lat (fly)

From Da Nang airport, fly to Da Lat’s Lien Khuong Airport (1 hour, ₫300,000–800,000). Arrive early afternoon. Afternoon: Xuan Huong Lake circuit, Crazy House (₫60,000), and the Da Lat night market.

Day 10: Da Lat

Morning: Cau Dat coffee farm (25km, the most scenic in the highlands). Afternoon: Datanla Falls (₫30,000) or the restored Da Lat train station. Evening at Da Lat’s food market (banh trang nuong, sinh to bo, lau banh mi).

Fly or bus to HCMC for onward travel, or stay a second night and continue south.

Weather note

The central coast (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An) receives heavy rainfall in October–December from the northeast monsoon. Hoi An floods regularly in November. If travelling in this period, start south (Da Lat, HCMC) and move north — the flooding window is shorter in the south.

Phong Nha receives heavy rain in September–November but the caves are accessible year-round. Da Lat is cool year-round at 1,500m and has its own distinct seasonal pattern.
