Mekong Delta 2026: Vietnam's River World of Floating Markets and Canals

Mekong Delta travel guide — floating markets, river delta life, Can Tho, My Tho, Ben Tre, and how to explore Vietnam's most productive agricultural region.

Guides for Mekong Delta

The Mekong Delta is the flat, canal-laced agricultural region of southern Vietnam through which the Mekong River reaches the sea across nine distributary channels. Vietnam’s most productive rice farming and fruit growing area, the delta has a distinct culture centred on the river — floating markets, boat transport, stilt houses on stilts above the water, and a way of life that has operated on the river system for centuries.

What the Mekong Delta is

The delta covers approximately 40,000 square kilometres between HCMC and the coast. The land is flat and barely above sea level — the river channels, canals, and distributaries divide it into islands and peninsulas. Moving between most communities requires boats. The main cities — Can Tho, My Tho, Ben Tre, Vinh Long, Chau Doc — are on the main river channels.

The floating markets are the defining image: boats piled with produce, anchored or drifting, trading from boat to boat on the river. The Cai Rang market near Can Tho is the largest remaining floating market in Vietnam.

Why visit the Mekong Delta

The delta provides a completely different Vietnam experience from the cities and coastline. The river world — narrow canals between fruit orchards, rowing boats passing under banana trees, Vietnamese family life visible directly from the water — is genuinely distinct.

The floating markets require dawn visits (05:00–08:00) when trading is active. Mid-morning the market thins significantly. This means staying overnight in Can Tho rather than arriving on a day trip from HCMC.

Planning approach

The delta can be visited:

  • Day trip from HCMC to My Tho or Ben Tre: Covers surface-level canal boat rides and a coconut candy workshop. Efficient but limited.
  • 2–3 nights based in Can Tho: Allows a dawn Cai Rang market visit, cycling through the delta islands, and day trips to Vinh Long.
  • Independent loop (4–7 days by motorbike): HCMC → My Tho → Vinh Long → Can Tho → Chau Doc → Phu Quoc ferry. The most comprehensive experience.

Seasons

The Mekong Delta has two seasons: dry (December–April) and wet (May–November, with flooding July–October). The wet season floods much of the delta and the boat access becomes even more central. The flooding is not a deterrent to visiting — the flooded rice paddies and additional water access are interesting in their own right.
