Ha Giang Loop Itinerary 2026: 4-Day Route, Road Conditions and Logistics

Ha Giang Loop, northern Vietnam

The Ha Giang Loop is a 350–400km motorbike circuit through Vietnam’s northernmost province. It passes through the Dong Van Karst Plateau UNESCO Global Geopark, crosses the Ma Pi Leng Pass (one of Vietnam’s most dramatic mountain roads), and reaches the Lung Cu Flag Tower at the northern tip of Vietnam near the Chinese border.

Most travellers do the loop in 4 days — 3 nights of riding. Five or six days gives more time in the villages and for viewpoints.

Day 1: Ha Giang to Yen Minh (110km)

Route: Ha Giang city → Quan Ba Pass (Heaven’s Gate) → Dong Van direction via Yen Minh.

Quan Ba Pass (Heaven’s Gate): The first major viewpoint. Twin karst mountains known as the Fairy Bosom dominate the valley below. Stop here for 30–45 minutes.

Sung La Valley: A green agricultural valley surrounded by karst peaks. The village is home to H’mong Vang (Flower Hmong) families. The terrain changes from green rolling hills to karst limestone as you descend.

Arrive Yen Minh: 110km from Ha Giang. Guesthouses available. This is the furthest point most day-trippers from Ha Giang reach; staying here puts you ahead for Day 2.

Day 2: Yen Minh to Dong Van (70km)

Route: Yen Minh → Dong Van town via Lung Cu and the flag tower (optional northern detour, +40km).

Dong Van town: A preserved stone village and the commercial centre of the plateau. The ancient quarter (pho co) has wooden buildings dating to the 19th century, with H’mong and Lo Lo ethnic minority residents. Sunday market draws people from surrounding villages.

Lung Cu Flag Tower (optional detour): The northern tip of Vietnam, 24km north of Dong Van town. A tall flagpole on a hilltop above a Chinese border village. The views are long. The significance is symbolic — this is Vietnam’s northernmost point. The detour adds 2–3 hours to Day 2. Some travellers do it as a Day 3 morning before continuing to Meo Vac.

Stay: Dong Van town. 1 night.

Day 3: Dong Van to Meo Vac — Ma Pi Leng Pass (50km)

The highlight of the loop. The 22km road from Dong Van to Meo Vac crosses the Ma Pi Leng Pass (1,500m). The road carves across a vertical limestone face above the Nho Que River gorge. The gorge is 600m deep — the view down from the road is vertiginous.

Drive slowly. The road is in good condition but narrow. The drop on the river side is unguarded in sections. Allow 2–3 hours for the 22km — there are multiple viewpoint stops.

The Nho Que River runs turquoise-green in the gorge — the colour comes from the limestone geology. Views from the pass take in the full gorge depth.

Meo Vac: A market town in a valley below the pass. Smaller than Dong Van, more local character. Sunday market is the main ethnic minority market in the region (Lo Lo, Mong, Giay traders).

Stay: Meo Vac. 1 night.

Day 4: Meo Vac to Ha Giang (165km)

Route: Meo Vac → Du Gia → Ha Giang.

The return route is different from the outward journey. The southern return via Du Gia and the Nho Que reservoir is longer but passes through different terrain — forests, lower valleys, and the Du Gia commune (a popular lunch stop).

The road surface on the return is generally good but some sections between Meo Vac and Du Gia have loose gravel. Allow 5–6 hours of riding time.

Self-ride vs Easy Rider guide

Self-ride: ₫150,000–200,000 ($6–8) per day for motorbike rental in Ha Giang town. Semi-automatic bikes (Honda Win copies) are standard. Manual gearbox experience required for the mountain sections.

Easy Rider guide: A local guide on their own motorbike who you ride pillion (or who guides your own bike). ₫600,000–800,000 ($24–32) per day. Recommended for riders without mountain experience or who want cultural context from the guide.

Honest assessment: The roads require competence. The Ma Pi Leng section specifically is a road where a mistake has serious consequences. Inexperienced riders should use the Easy Rider option.

Overnight buses from Hanoi

Hung Thanh and several operators run overnight buses Hanoi → Ha Giang (6–7 hours, ₫150,000–220,000 / $6–8.80). Depart Hanoi 22:00–23:00, arrive Ha Giang 05:00–06:00. Pick up your motorbike rental at the guesthouse and depart.

Return: overnight bus Ha Giang → Hanoi on the final evening of the loop.
