Ha Giang province has significant trekking territory beyond the motorbike loop — the Hoang Su Phi district in particular has rice terraces and ethnic minority villages on par with Sapa but with far fewer visitors.
Hoang Su Phi (Xin Man district)
Located in the southwest of Ha Giang province, approximately 120km from Ha Giang town by road. The district contains some of the most impressive terraced rice landscapes in northern Vietnam — UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award recognised.
The ethnic communities here (primarily Dao, Hmong, La Chi, and Nung) maintain distinct cultural practices and traditional dress. Multi-day treks through Hoang Su Phi stay in village homestays each night.
Best season: September–October for the golden rice harvest. The National Terraced Fields Festival takes place in Hoang Su Phi each October and draws Vietnamese tourists — the landscape during this festival is extraordinary, but accommodation must be booked well in advance.
Guide requirement: Multi-day village treks in Hoang Su Phi require a local guide — the paths between villages are not mapped for independent trekking and the language barrier is significant. Tour operators in Ha Giang town arrange these treks. Cost: ₫800,000–1,500,000 per person per day ($32–60) for a 2–4 day trek including guide, accommodation, and meals.
Getting to Hoang Su Phi: Bus from Ha Giang town to Viet Quang or Bac Quang (2 hours), then connection to Hoang Su Phi town. Or private car/motorbike from Ha Giang.
Trekking between loop villages
The loop is primarily a motorbike route, but several sections can be walked between villages:
Dong Van to surrounding plateau villages: Half-day and full-day walks connect Dong Van town to several Hmong villages on the plateau. The walks are visually magnificent but require a guide or clear directions as paths are not consistently marked.
Meo Vac valley walks: The river valley below Meo Vac has walking paths that follow the Nho Que River through karst scenery at valley level — a very different perspective from the road above. A local guide from Meo Vac guesthouses can arrange this.
Tay Con Linh mountain
At 2,419m, Tay Con Linh is the second highest peak in Indochina after Fansipan. Located in Ha Giang province in the Hoang Lien Son range extension. The summit trekking route passes through ethnic minority villages and primary forest. A 2-day trekking expedition with guide and basic mountain camping. Less developed infrastructure than Fansipan. Contact Ha Giang-based operators for current route access.
What trekking in Ha Giang offers that the loop doesn’t
The loop covers enormous visual ground quickly but the pace is motorbike pace. Trekking slows everything down and gives different access: morning light in the paddies, conversation with farmers through your guide, village evenings that aren’t accessible by road. For those with more time, combining 2 days on the loop with 2 days of trekking in Hoang Su Phi gives the full Ha Giang experience.
