Vietnam Family Trip 2026: Best Destinations and Itinerary with Kids
Vietnam works well for family travel. The country is safe, food is easy to adapt for children, and the combination of beaches, history, and nature gives varied days that work across different ages. The main practical challenges are the heat, the gap between luxury and budget accommodation, and choosing activities that hold children’s interest.
Best destinations for families
Hoi An: A manageable town, beach access at An Bang (30 minutes from the Ancient Town), cooking classes that work for children, and the lantern festival (full moon) is genuinely magical for kids. The Ancient Town is walkable without heat exhaustion if you go morning and evening.
Ha Long Bay: The boat experience (kayaking through limestone arches, exploring caves, swimming off the boat) works very well for children aged 8 and up. For younger children, the boat rocking and limited space can be challenging.
Da Lat: Cool climate (18–22°C), strawberry picking, horse riding, waterfall visits, and a calm pace. One of the best bases for families who find the coastal heat difficult.
Phu Quoc: Beach resort facilities, calm water at Long Beach and Sao Beach, the cable car to Hon Thom, and the Vinpearl Safari. The most resort-infrastructure on any Vietnamese island.
Hanoi: The Old Quarter is intense but interesting for older children (10+). The Hoan Kiem Lake area is safe for evening walks. The water puppet show (Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre, ₫100,000–200,000 / $4–8) is a reliable child-friendly experience.
Ages and activities
Under 5: Beach resorts (Phu Quoc, Hoi An), calm water swimming, and a slow pace. Avoid long bus journeys and activities with queuing in heat.
5–10: Cooking classes, boat trips, beach days, the water puppet show, and the Marble Mountains. Ha Long Bay overnight cruise works at this age.
10+: Ha Giang Loop (as pillion), Vietnam War history sites, overnight train journeys, diving introduction courses, and the full range of activities.
Practical family travel notes
Transport: Domestic flights between cities are strongly recommended for family travel — the overnight buses that backpackers use are uncomfortable for children. VietJet and Bamboo Airways domestic fares are affordable.
Food: Vietnamese food is generally child-friendly. Plain steamed rice (com trang), pho with broth and noodles, grilled chicken, and fresh fruit are available everywhere. The spice level is adjustable — ask for “khong cay” (no chilli) with any dish.
Heat: The central and southern coast is hot (28–35°C) for much of the year. Plan outdoor activities for morning (before 11:00) and late afternoon (after 16:00). A/c accommodation is standard at mid-range and above.
Medical: Pharmacies (nha thuoc) are common in cities and have most standard medications. HCMC and Hanoi have international hospitals (Family Medical Practice, Vinmec). Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is recommended.
