Lang Co and Bach Ma: The Quiet Coast Between Hue and Da Nang

Lang Co is a narrow peninsula 50km south of Hue and 40km north of Da Nang, sandwiched between a large lagoon and the sea. It sits at the base of the Hai Van Pass (Pass of Ocean Clouds) - the dramatic coastal mountain that forms the climatic boundary between central and northern Vietnam. Bach Ma National Park rises to 1,450m immediately above the peninsula.

What Lang Co is

A small fishing town and beach resort on a 10km peninsula. The lagoon side has the fishing harbour and mangroves; the ocean side has a long beach with some resort development. The town itself is quiet - a local Vietnamese beach resort rather than an international tourist destination.

Lang Co’s appeal is primarily its position: it is on the route between Hue and Hoi An, its beach is clean and uncrowded, and the surrounding landscape - the pass above, the lagoon behind, the national park on the mountain - is exceptional.

Hai Van Pass

The pass road that crosses the mountain above Lang Co is one of the great drives in Vietnam. The old pass road (not the modern tunnel) climbs from sea level to 496m in 20km with continuous views of Lang Co beach, the lagoon, and the sea extending toward Da Nang. From Hue: 50km south to the northern base of the pass. The climb takes 30 minutes by motorbike with views opening progressively as you ascend.

From Da Nang: 30km north. The Da Nang approach gives views back toward My Khe Beach.

Bach Ma National Park

The mountain directly above Lang Co reaches 1,450m and is preserved as a national park. Entry costs approximately ₫60,000 ($2.40) per person as of 2026. The park gate opens at 07:00 and closes at 17:00. The French colonial hill station built here in the 1930s is now a park tourist facility.

The park has five main hiking trails. The Pheasant Trail to Do Quyen Waterfall (2km round trip, 1–2 hours) is the most popular. The Five Lakes Trail (8km loop, 4–5 hours) passes several pools and waterfalls. The summit road trail to the 1,450m viewpoint gives panoramic views over the coast and Lang Co lagoon on clear mornings. Who comes here

Lang Co attracts a mix of Vietnamese domestic tourists (the beaches, the lagoon seafood), motorbike riders on the Hue–Hoi An coastal route (the pass road), and nature-focused travellers heading to Bach Ma National Park. International backpackers who know about it use it as a 1–2 night stop between Hue and Da Nang.

Getting to Lang Co

Lang Co sits on the main Hue–Da Nang corridor. The town has a railway station on the Reunification Express line - trains from Hue take approximately 1 hour, from Da Nang 30–40 minutes. By motorbike from either city, the Hai Van Pass old road is the approach. Bus services between Hue and Da Nang can drop at Lang Co on request.

When to visit

April–October is the best period for beach and outdoor activities. The Hai Van Pass road is open year-round. November–February brings cooler temperatures and occasional rain. The town is quietest from September to November outside Vietnamese holiday weekends.

Where to stay in Lang Co

Lang Co is small enough that all accommodation is within 10 minutes of both the beach and the lagoon. The choice is between a resort stay and a budget guesthouse for transit.

Upscale (₫2,500,000–6,000,000 / $100–240): Vedana Lagoon Resort and Spa is the standout property - set on the lagoon with overwater bungalows, pool, and mountain views. The most atmospheric stay in the area and appropriate for 2–3 night retreat visits. Book ahead; it fills quickly during the summer peak.

Mid-range (₫400,000–2,500,000 / $16–100): Lang Co Beach Resort is the established option directly on the beachfront with pool and beach access - ₫1,000,000–2,500,000 ($40–100). Truong Son Xanh Hotel offers clean rooms with easy access to both the beach and the lagoon at ₫400,000–800,000 ($16–32) - good value for a one-night transit stop.

Budget (₫250,000–500,000 / $10–20): Family-run guesthouses on the main road through the peninsula from ₫250,000–500,000 ($10–20). Simple private rooms with air-con and basic bathrooms. For transit visitors passing between Hue and Da Nang, these are entirely adequate - the experience in Lang Co is the scenery and the lagoon seafood, not the accommodation.

Where to eat

Lagoon seafood restaurants: The cluster of restaurants on the lagoon-side road (4–5km from the town centre on the Tam Giang Lagoon road) serves the freshest seafood in the area. Grilled tiger prawns, steamed clams, fresh fish, and squid at approximately ₫100,000–250,000 ($4–10) per person as of 2026. These open for lunch and dinner. The quality is significantly better than the beachfront strip restaurants, which charge roughly 30% more for similar dishes.

Town restaurants: Lang Co town itself has a handful of basic Vietnamese restaurants serving pho, com binh dan (mixed rice plates), and bun thit nuong (grilled pork vermicelli) at ₫30,000–60,000 ($1.20–2.40) per dish as of 2026. Good for a quick meal before or after the Hai Van Pass ride.

Vedana Lagoon dining: The resort’s restaurant is open to non-guests and serves Vietnamese and international dishes with lagoon views. Approximately ₫150,000–400,000 ($6–16) per person for a full meal.

Motorbike rental: Available from guesthouses for approximately ₫150,000–200,000 ($6–8) per day as of 2026. Required for the Hai Van Pass ride and Bach Ma access. The old Hai Van Pass road from Lang Co town to the summit is 20km - allow 45 minutes uphill with stops. The road is narrow near the top.
