Hanoi to Hoi An 2026: Best Route, Transport and Stops Along the Way

· 3 min read Itinerary
Train through Vietnamese countryside

Hanoi to Hoi An is 950km by road. Most travellers break the journey at two or three stops rather than travelling it in one hit. The most natural route goes through Ninh Binh, Phong Nha, and Hue — each a destination in its own right. Flying direct (1.5 hours, ₫300,000–900,000) is also an option if time is limited — compare fares across Vietnamese carriers with Aviasales.

Option 1: The full overland route with stops (10–14 days)

The recommended approach for first-time visitors with time.

Hanoi (2–3 nights)Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh (2 nights)Phong Nha (2 nights)Hue (2 nights)Hai Van PassHoi An (2+ nights)

Total: 10–14 days depending on pace. Uses a combination of tourist buses, sleeper trains, and transfers.

Option 2: Direct flight

Hanoi (HAN) to Da Nang (DAD): 1.5 hours. VietJet, Bamboo Airways, Vietnam Airlines — multiple flights daily. ₫300,000–900,000 ($12–36) in advance. From Da Nang, a taxi or Grab to Hoi An costs ₫200,000–350,000 ($8–14) and takes 30–45 minutes. A pre-booked fixed-price airport transfer from Da Nang to Hoi An is worth considering if you’re arriving with luggage or at night — fixed fare, driver at arrivals.

When to fly direct: If the time budget is 5–7 days total, the overland route doesn’t make sense. Fly to Da Nang and spend the full time in Hoi An and nearby.

Option 3: Train to Hue + transfer to Hoi An

The Reunification Express (SE trains) runs Hanoi–Hue in 12–13 hours overnight. This covers the longest boring stretch at night. From Hue: tourist bus to Hoi An via the Hai Van Pass (3–4 hours, ₫150,000–300,000), the most scenic section of the overland route.

This is the best option for travellers who want to combine the overnight train experience with the Hai Van Pass scenery without stopping at every intermediate point.

Detailed stop guides

Ninh Binh (optional — 2 nights or long day trip)

2 hours south of Hanoi by bus. The Trang An boat tour (₫200,000) winds through limestone karst waterways past cave entrances and pagodas. Bich Dong Pagoda is built into a cave. Mua Cave has 500 steps to a viewpoint over the Tam Coc rice fields.

Worth 1–2 nights as a stop; possible as a long day trip from Hanoi if time is tight.

Phong Nha (2 nights)

9–10 hours from Hanoi by tourist bus. The village is small and easy to navigate. Two days allows Paradise Cave (₫350,000, 7km of lit cavern) and the Dark Cave (₫450,000, zip line entry, mud bath, kayaking). The Bong Lai Valley cycle is good for a relaxed morning.

From Phong Nha to Hue: Tourist bus, 2–3 hours, ₫150,000–250,000. Fast and direct.

Hue (2 nights)

The Imperial Citadel (₫200,000) and two royal tombs (Khai Dinh + Tu Duc, ₫150,000 each) use up two full days. Evening at the bach hop restaurants on Bach Dang street for bun bo Hue.

Hai Van Pass to Hoi An

Don’t take the tunnel. The old Hai Van Pass road (Highway 1 over the mountain) is the most scenic section of the entire Hanoi–Hoi An overland route. The pass rises to 496m with views of Da Nang Bay to the south and Lang Co lagoon to the north.

Hire a motorbike for this stretch (180,000–250,000 / $7.20–10 per day in Hue) or arrange a car transfer via the pass (₫500,000–800,000 / $20–32 per car). Stop at the Marble Mountains (30 minutes) before arriving Hoi An.
