Hanoi’s location makes it a good base for day trips, though the most compelling destinations — Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Ha Giang — are better with at least one overnight.

The limestone karst landscape south of Hanoi — Trang An, Tam Coc, Hoa Lu — is genuinely one of the most beautiful areas of northern Vietnam. A day trip is possible but Ninh Binh deserves at least one night. See the Ninh Binh guide.

Transport: Buses from Hanoi’s My Dinh or Giap Bat station, ₫100,000–150,000 one way, 2–2.5 hours. A private car from Hanoi runs ₫600,000–1,000,000 return.

As a day trip: Feasible if you leave by 7am and focus on one area (Trang An or Tam Coc, not both).

A day trip to Ha Long Bay from Hanoi barely counts as seeing Ha Long Bay. The bay itself is 3.5–4 hours from Hanoi by bus; by the time you arrive, cruise for 2–3 hours, and return, you’ve spent 8–9 hours on a bus for 2–3 hours on the water.

If you’re going to Ha Long Bay, go on a cruise — 2 nights is the minimum for the full experience. See the Ha Long Bay guide.

Transport: Multiple bus operators run Hanoi–Ha Long City–Haiphong routes. The Cat Ba Island combination (bus to Haiphong, ferry to Cat Ba) is recommended over Ha Long City as a base.

Perfume Pagoda (Chùa Hương)

A significant Buddhist pilgrimage site in My Duc district, 60km southwest of Hanoi. The pilgrimage involves a boat trip (1.5 hours each way) along a river through limestone hills, then a climb (cable car option available) to the main cave pagoda. The scenery on the boat trip is the highlight.

Peak season: The Perfume Pagoda Festival runs from the first lunar month to the third (approximately February–April). During this period, the site is extremely crowded with Vietnamese pilgrims — expect queues at everything. The scenery is the same off-season.

Transport: Public bus to Ben Duc (₫40,000–60,000, 1.5 hours), then boat (₫50,000 per person, shared). Organised tours from Hanoi run ₫300,000–600,000 including transport and guide.

Duong Lam Ancient Village

Vietnam’s first ancient village to be recognised as a national heritage site, 45km from Hanoi in Son Tay district. A cluster of houses built from local laterite stone, some over 400 years old. The village has a slower, more traditional character than Hanoi. Also nearby: the Mia Pagoda (17th century, one of the most intact in northern Vietnam).

Transport: Bus 71 from Long Bien bus station to Son Tay (₫40,000, 1.5 hours), then xe om to Duong Lam. Entry ₫20,000. Best on weekdays when it’s not crowded with domestic tourists.

Ba Vi National Park

Mountain park 50km west of Hanoi, rising to 1,296m. Forests, temple ruins, and a cooler climate than the city. Good for a half-day if you have a motorbike or car. The Three Goddesses Shrine near the summit is the main draw.

Transport: Car or motorbike from Hanoi (1.5 hours). Grab doesn’t go this far — hire a car or rent a motorbike. Entry ₫50,000. Cable car available.

What’s not worth the day trip

Sapa is a 6-hour journey from Hanoi (train or bus). A day trip to Sapa is not possible — it requires at least 2 nights. See the Sapa guide.

Ha Giang is 4–5 hours from Hanoi by bus. Same situation — not a day trip destination. See the Ha Giang guide.
