Hanoi Airport Transfers: Getting from Noi Bai to the City

Noi Bai International Airport sits around 35–45 km north of Hanoi’s Old Quarter - far enough that the transfer choice matters. Getting it wrong means overpaying by a factor of three, or finding yourself in an unlicensed cab that takes the slow route. Here’s how every option works, what it costs in 2026, and what to watch out for.

How Far Is the Airport from the City?

Noi Bai is on the northern edge of Hanoi, connected to the centre by Highway 5 and the modern expressway that cuts travel time significantly. Most journeys to the Old Quarter take 40–60 minutes. During morning and evening rush hours (7–9 am, 5–7 pm), add another 20–30 minutes. The journey to Tay Ho (West Lake) and the expat-heavy Ba Dinh district is a little shorter - around 35–50 minutes.

Option 1: Grab (Ride-Hailing App)

Grab is the most reliable way to get into Hanoi without language barriers or fare negotiation. The app gives you a fixed price before you confirm, so there are no surprises.

Cost as of 2026: approximately 200,000–280,000 VND to the Old Quarter; 180,000–240,000 VND to Ba Dinh or Tay Ho.

How to use it: Download the Grab app before you land. At Noi Bai, follow signs to the designated ride-hailing pickup zone - it’s marked separately from the taxi rank. Open the app, enter your destination, and wait for your driver. GrabCar is the standard sedan option; GrabCar Plus gets you a larger, newer vehicle.

Watch out for: surge pricing during major holidays (Tet, National Day). If the price looks unusually high, close the app and try again in five minutes.

Option 2: Official Metered Taxis

Metered taxis from licensed operators are a safe choice if Grab isn’t available or your phone isn’t working. The key is sticking to known operators.

Trusted companies: Noi Bai Taxi (the official airport operator), Mai Linh (green livery), G7 Taxi (white with orange logo), Vinasun (white with green logo).

Cost as of 2026: approximately 350,000–450,000 VND to the Old Quarter, including the expressway toll of around 30,000 VND. Some drivers quote a flat rate - this is usually negotiable downward, but metered is safer.

Where to find them: Exit the arrivals hall at either Terminal 1 (domestic) or Terminal 2 (international) and follow the taxi signs to the official rank. There will be a dispatcher at a booth - use them rather than approaching drivers directly.

Avoiding the scam: Unlicensed drivers (“xe ôm” operators and freelance taxi touts) work the terminal arrivals area aggressively. They’ll approach you before you reach the official rank, sometimes wearing fake uniforms. Decline everyone who approaches you indoors. The official rank is always outside.

Option 3: Airport Bus (Route 86)

The cheapest reliable option is the 86 Express Bus, operated by Hanoi’s public bus company. It runs from both terminals to Hoan Kiem Lake (near the Old Quarter) via several city-centre stops.

Cost: 45,000 VND (as of 2026). Pay the conductor on board.

Journey time: 45–75 minutes to the Old Quarter, depending on traffic. Buses run every 20–30 minutes from approximately 5:30 am to 11:30 pm.

Luggage: Suitable for one bag per person. The bus has storage space beneath the seats and in the aisle, but it gets crowded during peak hours.

Where to board: Outside Terminal 2 (international) and Terminal 1 (domestic), look for the blue bus stop sign marked “86”. Note that you cannot book a seat in advance.

There’s also Route 7, which connects the airport to Giap Bat bus station in the south of the city - useful if your accommodation is near the train station or south of Hoan Kiem Lake.

Option 4: Private Transfer (Pre-Booked)

If you’re arriving late at night, travelling with a group, or want a guaranteed meet-and-greet service, a pre-booked private transfer removes all the guesswork.

Cost: approximately 350,000–500,000 VND for a private sedan (1–4 passengers), or 600,000–900,000 VND for a minivan (up to 8 passengers), as of 2026.

Reputable booking options include Kiwitaxi and Welcome Pickups, both of which provide confirmed drivers, fixed prices, and flight tracking. Your driver meets you in arrivals with a name board.

Why it’s worth it late at night: The bus stops running around 11:30 pm, Grab availability drops after midnight, and unlicensed operators become more persistent as supply thins. A pre-booked transfer sidesteps all of that.

Option 5: Hotel Shuttle

Many mid-range and upscale hotels in Hanoi offer airport pickup for guests, typically for 200,000–400,000 VND each way. It’s convenient but not always the cheapest option. Confirm the price with your hotel before arriving - some charge significantly more than the Grab equivalent.

Scam Awareness

Noi Bai has a well-documented history of fare inflation. The main traps:

• Fake taxis: Drivers with official-looking markings but no meter, or a rigged meter that runs fast. Stick to Mai Linh, G7, Noi Bai Taxi, or Grab.
• Long route: Some drivers take Highway 5 (the old road) instead of the expressway, doubling journey time and allowing the meter to run. You can ask for “đường cao tốc” (expressway) but Grab removes this variable entirely.
• “Broken meter” scam: Driver claims the meter is broken and offers a fixed rate (usually 3x the correct price). Leave the taxi and get another.
• Currency confusion: Some drivers quote in USD or mistakenly receive overpayment by relying on the passenger’s confusion. Always confirm the currency before accepting a price quote.

Returning to the Airport

For the return journey, book a Grab or pre-arranged transfer well in advance of a morning flight - Hanoi traffic can be severe before 8 am. Allow at least 90 minutes from the Old Quarter during peak hours. The 86 bus is reliable for mid-morning or afternoon departures but cuts off too early for flights departing before 7 am.

Noi Bai has two terminals:
