Hanoi’s cafe culture is genuinely excellent for working. The Vietnamese relationship with coffee is serious, the wifi in most specialty cafes is fast (30–100 Mbps typical in better establishments), and Hanoi’s cafe owners are accustomed to people sitting for hours. Buying one coffee and staying three hours is standard.

Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem area

Cafe Giang (39 Nguyen Huu Huan)

The originator of Hanoi egg coffee. The upstairs room is small, dark-panelled, and has a certain 1940s quality. Wifi is available but inconsistent. Better as an experience than a workspace, but it works for an hour or two. The egg coffee (cà phê trứng) is ₫30,000–45,000 and is the reason to come.

Cafe Dinh (13 Dinh Tien Hoang)

Another egg coffee institution, hidden behind a door that looks like it leads to someone’s home. Narrow, three floors, no sign. Locals and travellers in equal measure. Good wifi on the upper floors. Atmosphere is the draw.

The Note Coffee (4 Dinh Liet)

Famous for its walls covered in sticky notes from visitors. Tourist-facing but functional — good wifi, multiple power outlets, English-speaking staff. The coffee is competent rather than exceptional. ₫35,000–65,000 per drink.

Tranquil Books & Coffee (5 Nguyen Quang Bich)

A bookshop-café combination in the Old Quarter. Quieter than most area cafes, reasonable wifi, the kind of place where sitting for 3 hours with a laptop is clearly encouraged. ₫40,000–70,000 per drink.

Tay Ho (West Lake)

Tay Ho has Hanoi’s best café concentration for serious work. The area has a large expat community that supports quality independent cafés with reliable infrastructure.

Cafés on Tran Quoc Viet and Quang An streets

Several specialty coffee shops in the Tay Ho residential area have excellent wifi, lake views in some cases, and a work culture that means staff won’t rush you. Prices are slightly higher than Old Quarter — ₫45,000–80,000 per drink — but the quality reflects this.

Toby’s Estate Vietnam (multiple locations)

Australian-founded specialty coffee chain with a location in the Old Quarter and Tay Ho area. Reliable wifi, good espresso-based drinks, Western-style coffee culture. An Aeropress or pour-over at ₫65,000–95,000.

Practical notes for working from Hanoi cafes

Power outlets: The more established cafés have good outlet availability. In older cafés, outlets may be limited — arrive early to get a seat near the wall. A short extension cable is useful.

Wifi passwords: Most cafes display the password on the wall, a card on the table, or the receipt. Ask “Mật khẩu wifi là gì?” (What is the wifi password?).

Noise levels: Hanoi cafes vary enormously. The Old Quarter street cafes are loud with traffic and sometimes with music. Quieter options are usually found on side streets or upper floors. Tay Ho is generally quieter than the Old Quarter.

Hours: Most Hanoi cafes open from 7am and close between 10pm and midnight. Some street-facing cafes close earlier.

Coworking spaces

If you need reliable fast internet, a proper desk, and guaranteed quiet, Hanoi has a growing coworking sector.

Toong Coworking Space (multiple Hanoi locations): The main coworking chain, with locations in central Hanoi and Tay Ho. Day passes from ₫200,000 ($8). Good wifi, meeting rooms, printer access.

Dreamplex (Tay Ho): A premium coworking option with fast internet (100–200 Mbps), good air conditioning, and a professional environment. Day pass around ₫300,000 ($12).

For longer stays, monthly memberships at these spaces cost ₫1,500,000–4,000,000 ($60–160).
