Finding vegan food in Hanoi is manageable with the right knowledge. The challenge is that Vietnamese cuisine relies heavily on fish sauce, shrimp paste, and meat-based broths even in dishes that look vegetarian. The solution is knowing where to go.

Cơm chay — Buddhist vegetarian restaurants

The most reliable source of genuinely vegan food in Hanoi is the Buddhist vegetarian (cơm chay) restaurant. These establishments prepare food without meat, fish sauce, or animal products — not for Western dietary reasons but for Buddhist religious practice. The food is good.

The 1st and 15th of each lunar month (âm lịch), many Vietnamese Buddhists eat vegetarian. On these days, vegetarian options appear at otherwise non-vegetarian restaurants throughout the city. Even street food vendors will often have a vegetarian version of their standard dish.

Govinda’s (Hare Krishna restaurant, 19 Le Thanh Ton area): An Indian-run vegetarian restaurant with a buffet format popular with expats and tourists. Not traditionally Vietnamese but reliable for fully plant-based food. Around ₫70,000–120,000 for a full meal.

Bát Giác (Hanoi Buddhist restaurants): Several unnamed or simply-signed cơm chay restaurants in Ba Dinh district and near the major pagodas. Look for the yellow Buddhist flag or “cơm chay” sign. These are usually cash only, menu in Vietnamese, and extremely cheap — ₫30,000–60,000 for a full meal.

Loving Hut: An international vegan chain with a location in Hanoi. The food is vegan and adequate, though not particularly exciting. Useful as a reliable fallback. Around ₫80,000–150,000 per meal.

Tofu dishes

Tofu (đậu phụ or đậu hũ) features prominently in Vietnamese cuisine. The northern preparation is different from the south — often fried until crispy outside, then braised in tomato sauce (đậu phụ sốt cà chua), or stuffed with pork (which can be requested as vegetarian in cơm chay restaurants).

At Buddhist restaurants, tofu is typically prepared in 3–4 different ways per day. It’s the protein backbone of the cơm chay meal.

Phở chay

Vegetarian pho exists and is served at many restaurants. The broth is made from vegetable stock — it lacks the depth of the bone-broth original, but a well-made phở chay with tofu and mushrooms is worth having. Ask specifically: “Có phở chay không?” (Do you have vegetarian pho?).

Some dedicated vegetarian restaurants in Hanoi serve phở chay as their primary dish. Around ₫45,000–65,000.

Bún riêu chay

The vegetarian version of the crab noodle soup uses mushrooms and tofu in place of crab. Available at Buddhist restaurants on the 1st and 15th of the lunar month at many regular establishments.

What to watch out for

Fish sauce: Present in nearly every Vietnamese dish, including many that don’t taste particularly fishy. In non-Buddhist restaurants, “vegetarian” can mean “no meat” while still including fish sauce. If you’re vegan, eat at cơm chay restaurants or explain clearly.

Shrimp paste (mắm tôm): Used as a condiment with many dishes. Easy to refuse.

Broth: Even noodle soups in regular restaurants typically use pork or chicken broth. Only in dedicated vegetarian restaurants can you assume vegetable-based broth.

Apps and finding restaurants

HappyCow lists vegetarian and vegan restaurants in Hanoi with user reviews. The listings are reasonably accurate for the Old Quarter and central areas.

The area around Kim Lien in Dong Da district has a higher concentration of Buddhist residents and therefore more cơm chay restaurants than the Old Quarter — worth exploring for a genuine vegetarian meal away from the tourist zone.
