Hanoi’s transport options range from excellent (Grab) to confusing (city buses) to atmospheric but not practical (cyclo). Here’s what actually works.

Grab (the essential app)

Grab is the most important thing to download before arriving in Hanoi. It works like Uber: request a ride via app, see the price before you confirm, track the driver to your location. Available as GrabBike (motorbike, fastest and cheapest) or GrabCar (4-door car, more comfortable, more expensive).

GrabBike: For routes under 5km in the Old Quarter and central Hanoi, this is the fastest option. A typical 3km trip costs ₫25,000–40,000 ($1–1.60). The driver comes to you, you hop on, the price is fixed.

GrabCar: For airport transfers, longer trips, or if you have luggage. A 10km trip costs ₫100,000–180,000 ($4–7.20). The airport to Old Quarter costs approximately ₫200,000–280,000 ($8–11).

Practical tips: Save the address of your accommodation in both English and Vietnamese characters — drivers sometimes can’t find locations on the map with English-only input. Confirm the drop-off point on the map before confirming the booking. Helmets are provided by GrabBike drivers; wear them (required by law and the right thing to do in Hanoi traffic).

Xe om (traditional motorbike taxi)

Xe om drivers are the motorbike taxis who wait outside tourist areas, hotels, and bus stations. They’re identifiable by the person sitting on a stationary motorbike who gestures at you hopefully.

Unlike Grab, xe om prices require negotiation before you get on. Quote a price about 60–70% of what they first say and meet somewhere in the middle. For short trips in the Old Quarter, ₫30,000–50,000 is reasonable. Be clear about your destination before agreeing.

Xe om is slightly cheaper than Grab for short trips but requires the negotiation, no fixed price, and no accountability if the driver takes the long route. For most visitors, Grab is easier.

Cyclo

The three-wheeled bicycle rickshaw is no longer a practical transport option in Hanoi — it’s a tourist ride. The cyclo driver pedals you through the Old Quarter while describing sights or simply navigating. Negotiate a price before getting in (typically ₫100,000–200,000 for a 30–45 minute circuit). Useful once for the experience; not useful for getting places.

City buses

Hanoi’s public bus network is cheap (₫9,000 per trip) and extensive but challenging for visitors. Stops are not always clearly marked, routes are not intuitive, and buses can be very crowded during peak hours. The Hanoi bus app (Buyt Thong Minh) shows routes in Vietnamese.

If you’re willing to puzzle it out, buses work well for longer distances (e.g., from the Old Quarter to Ba Vi National Park). For most visitors, Grab is easier.

Bus 86: The Noi Bai Airport to Hoan Kiem Lake bus runs approximately every 15–20 minutes and costs ₫45,000 ($1.80). Travel time 60–90 minutes depending on traffic. This is a legitimate option if you’re traveling light and not in a hurry.

Renting a motorbike

Renting a motorbike in Hanoi is possible (semi-automatics from ₫100,000–150,000/day at rental shops in the Old Quarter) but is not recommended for visitors without significant motorbike experience. Hanoi traffic is not friendly to learners. The ring roads and multi-lane junctions outside the Old Quarter require confident motorbike handling.

If you want to ride in Vietnam, start in quieter cities — Hoi An, Da Lat, Ninh Binh — before attempting Hanoi.

Legal note: Vietnam officially requires an International Driving Permit with motorcycle endorsement to legally ride. In practice, this is rarely checked in the Old Quarter for small motorbikes. This doesn’t make it legal — it means the enforcement is inconsistent.

Airport transfer options

Noi Bai International Airport is 35km north of central Hanoi.

OptionCostTime
Grab Car₫200,000–280,000 ($8–11)35–60 min depending on traffic
Official meter taxi₫350,000–450,000 ($14–18)35–60 min
Bus 86₫45,000 ($1.80)60–90 min
Minibus shuttle₫100,000–150,000 ($4–6)90–120 min (multiple stops)

Grab from the airport is the best combination of cost and convenience. Go to the official Grab pickup area (signposted in the arrivals hall). Meter taxis from the official rank are also reliable — avoid unmarked taxis.

Crossing the road

Hanoi traffic is genuinely daunting for first-time visitors. The key technique: step out slowly, maintain a steady pace, and let the motorbikes flow around you. Do not stop suddenly. Do not run. Eye contact with approaching drivers can cause confusion — look at where you’re going and trust that they’ll adjust. This works because the drivers are experienced at navigating pedestrians; the chaos has its own logic.
