Where to Stay in Hanoi 2026: Best Neighbourhoods

Hanoi’s neighbourhoods have distinct characters, and where you stay shapes the experience significantly. The Old Quarter is the default for first-time visitors but it’s not always the best choice.

Old Quarter (Hoàn Kiếm)

The most popular area for tourists, and for good reasons: everything is walkable, there’s constant activity, and the accommodation range is enormous from ₫150,000 dorm beds to ₫3,000,000+ boutique hotels.

Pros: Walkable to Hoan Kiem Lake, the main temples, the street food, the evening beer streets. Highest concentration of restaurants, cafes, and tour operators. Very easy to orient yourself.

Cons: Noisy — the Old Quarter streets are narrow, echo loudly, and motorbike horns are constant from early morning. The area most targeted by street scams (xe om overcharging, fake tour companies). Tourist-priced everything. Rooms facing the street are loud; ask for interior rooms.

Price range: Hostel dorms ₫150,000–300,000 ($6–12). Budget guesthouses with private rooms ₫300,000–700,000 ($12–28). Mid-range boutique hotels ₫800,000–2,000,000 ($32–80). Higher-end hotels ₫2,000,000–5,000,000+ ($80–200).

Best for: First-time visitors in Hanoi for 2–3 nights who want maximum walking access and don’t mind the noise.

French Quarter / Hoan Kiem surroundings

Just south of Hoan Kiem Lake, the French Quarter has wider streets, the Opera House, the Metropole Hotel, and a quieter atmosphere. Still very central. A short walk or quick Grab to the Old Quarter.

Pros: Quieter than the Old Quarter core. More upscale feel. Close to the Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts and the Hoa Lo Prison. Some of Hanoi’s best higher-end hotels are here.

Cons: Less street food character. More expensive on average. The area can feel slightly corporate in parts.

Price range: Budget options are limited here. Comfortable hotels start around ₫1,200,000–2,500,000 ($48–100). Luxury: ₫5,000,000–20,000,000+ ($200–800+) for Metropole and equivalent.

Best for: Travellers who want central access with less chaos. Good for business travellers and those wanting a base near the French-era sights.

Ba Dinh (Ho Chi Minh complex area)

Ba Dinh is the political district — government ministries, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex, the Temple of Literature. Residential and institutional, with significantly fewer tourists.

Pros: Quiet. Central enough (2–3km from Hoan Kiem). Easy access to Ho Chi Minh complex and Temple of Literature. Locals’ cafes and restaurants at local prices.

Cons: Requires Grab for most Old Quarter access. Limited tourist infrastructure. Less interesting at night.

Price range: Guesthouses and smaller hotels ₫400,000–1,200,000 ($16–48). Generally cheaper than Old Quarter for equivalent quality.

Best for: Travellers on a longer stay who want lower noise levels and don’t need to be in the thick of things.

West Lake / Tay Ho

About 4–5km northwest of the Old Quarter, West Lake is Hanoi’s expat residential hub. International restaurants, specialty coffee, streets that aren’t gridlocked with motorbikes.

Pros: Much quieter than the Old Quarter. Better quality international food options. Tran Quoc Pagoda is here. Nice for morning runs around the lake. Good longer-stay apartment rentals available.

Cons: Need Grab for everything. Less convenient for the major tourist sights. Limited budget accommodation.

Price range: Guesthouses and small hotels from ₫500,000 ($20). Apartments and longer-stay options from ₫15,000,000/month ($600). Some boutique guesthouses in the ₫800,000–1,800,000 ($32–72) range.

Best for: Digital nomads, longer-stay visitors (1+ week), expats, or travellers who find the Old Quarter too intense.

What to book

Book accommodation well in advance during peak periods: Vietnamese Lunar New Year (Tết, January/February), major Vietnamese public holidays, and October when Ha Giang Loop season draws visitors north. The Old Quarter in particular fills up.

For most visitors, the Old Quarter for the first visit; West Lake or Ba Dinh for second visits or longer stays.
