Vietnam in April: Weather, Regions and What to Do
April is widely considered one of the best months to visit Vietnam. The entire country is accessible, the north is warm without being oppressive, and the central coast is in peak form. The south is extremely hot but dry.

North (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa): Late spring, with Hanoi at 25-30°C and increasing humidity but minimal rain. Ha Long Bay is in one of its best windows - clear skies, warm temperatures, and good visibility for cruises. This is the tail end of the optimal cruise season before summer heat and haze set in. Sapa is comfortable at 18-24°C with green valleys and clear mountain views on most days.
Central (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An): Dry and warm (28-33°C). The central coast is fully into its dry season, which runs April through August. Da Nang’s beaches are in prime condition. Hue’s Imperial Citadel and royal tombs are pleasant to explore before the summer heat peaks. In even-numbered years, the Hue Festival (a major cultural event with traditional music, royal court reenactments, and art installations) typically takes place in April or May.
South (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc): April is the hottest month in the south. HCMC regularly hits 35-37°C. The last weeks of dry season mean clear skies but fierce heat. The first monsoon showers sometimes arrive in late April, bringing brief relief. Phu Quoc remains dry and swimmable but is transitioning toward wet season.

Ha Long Bay: April offers some of the year’s best cruising conditions. Visibility is high, temperatures are warm enough for swimming in the bay, and the limestone karsts are sharply defined against clear skies. Phong Nha Caves: April is peak season for Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. All caves are open, water levels are low, and the weather is warm and dry. Hung Kings Temple Festival (Gio To Hung Vuong): A national public holiday falling on the 10th day of the third lunar month (typically in April). Vietnamese travel to the Hung Kings Temple in Phu Tho province, north of Hanoi, to honour the mythical founders of the nation. Expect crowded transport on this day and the days surrounding it.
Hue Festival (even years): In even-numbered years, Hue hosts a major biennial cultural festival, usually in April or May. Performances, exhibitions, and events take place across the Imperial Citadel and throughout the city. Check dates for your travel year.
Hoi An Lantern Festival: The monthly full-moon lantern event continues. April’s warm, dry evenings make it one of the more comfortable editions.

- Heat in the south: If your itinerary includes HCMC or the Mekong Delta, plan outdoor activities for early morning. Afternoon temperatures above 35°C are common and physically draining.
- Pricing: April is high season across Vietnam. Ha Long Bay cruises and Hoi An hotels should be booked well ahead. Easter can push prices higher if it falls in April.
- Packing: Light, breathable clothing. Sun protection is essential everywhere. A hat and reef-safe sunscreen for beach days.
