Sapa has a growing backpacker scene but is not as well-served with purpose-built hostels as Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. Most budget accommodation consists of small guesthouses with dorm rooms and cheap private rooms. Expect to pay slightly more than in the lowlands — Sapa’s relative remoteness and tourist popularity both factor in.
Budget options in Sapa town
Sapa Backpacker Hostel: One of the few hostel-format properties in town with a designated dorm room setup. Common area, basic kitchen access, helpful staff. Dorm from ₫200,000–300,000 ($8–12). Organises trekking groups for solo travellers to share guide costs.
Cat Cat View Hotel (budget wing): A mid-range hotel with cheaper dorm and basic private rooms at the lower end of its pricing. The location above Cat Cat valley has good views from upper floor rooms. Basic private rooms from ₫350,000–600,000 ($14–24).
Small guesthouses on Ham Rong Street and surrounding areas: Several family guesthouses offer the cheapest Sapa beds. No dorms typically but private rooms from ₫250,000–400,000 ($10–16) with basic but functional facilities. These are usually cash only.
Valley homestays as budget accommodation
The most atmospheric budget option: staying in an ethnic minority village homestay. These range in price from ₫200,000–500,000 ($8–20) per person including dinner and breakfast — often cheaper than Sapa town guesthouses.
The trade-off: the facilities are simpler (some lack hot water, heating can be minimal in cold months), and you need transport back to Sapa town for cable car trips and onward travel. For travellers whose primary interest is the village experience, this is the best budget choice.
Practical notes
Cold weather gear: Even in budget accommodation, you’ll need warm clothes for evenings in Sapa (year-round) and proper cold-weather layers in winter (November–February). Don’t arrive in summer-only clothes expecting the guesthouse to provide warmth.
Booking: Sapa accommodation fills up during Vietnamese public holidays and the October harvest season. Book at least a week ahead in these periods.
What’s included: Many Sapa guesthouses include breakfast. The standard is usually bánh mì or instant noodles rather than a cooked meal. Ask what’s included before booking.
