Things to do here

The top-rated tours and activities here — all with instant confirmation and free cancellation on most bookings.

Hue has more imperial-era architecture than anywhere in Vietnam and a food scene that justifies a separate day of eating. Plan at least two full days.

The Imperial Citadel

The defining sight of Hue. The Citadel complex is a walled city within a city, modelled on the Forbidden City in Beijing but distinctly Vietnamese in execution. Construction began in 1804 under Emperor Gia Long.

The complex has three concentric enclosures: the outer Citadel walls (10km perimeter), the Imperial Enclosure, and the Forbidden Purple City (damaged heavily in the 1968 Tet Offensive). The Imperial Enclosure contains the Noon Gate (Ngo Mon), the Thai Hoa Palace (audience hall), the seven royal temples, and extensive gardens.

Entry: ₫200,000 ($8). Open 07:00–17:30. Allow 3–4 hours minimum.

What to prioritise: The Thai Hoa Palace (best-preserved major building), the Mieu Temple and the dynastic altar, the Truong Sanh Palace gardens, and the Nine Dynastic Urns. The Forbidden Purple City is substantially ruined but the scale and the remaining foundations communicate the original enormity.

Royal tombs along the Perfume River

Seven Nguyen emperors built their tombs in the hills south of the city along the Perfume River. Each is different in character, reflecting the emperor’s personality and reign.

Minh Mang Tomb: The most architecturally harmonious. Symmetric layout of lakes, pavilions, and gateways in a symmetrical mandala plan. Completed in 1843. ₫150,000 ($6).

Tu Duc Tomb: The largest and most elaborate complex. Emperor Tu Duc (who reigned 36 years) built this as both a retreat and a tomb. Lakes, pavilions, garden arbours. The most interesting for time spent. ₫150,000 ($6).

Khai Dinh Tomb: The most visually striking. Built 1920–1931, it fuses Vietnamese imperial form with French Baroque and Chinese elements. The interior is covered floor-to-ceiling in mosaic made from Vietnamese ceramics and glass. Unlike anything else in Vietnam. ₫150,000 ($6).

Combination tickets: Available for 3-tomb or all-site packages. Worth calculating vs individual tickets for planned visits.

Thien Mu Pagoda

The seven-storey octagonal tower (Phuoc Duyen Tower, built 1844) is one of Vietnam’s most iconic pagoda images. The active Buddhist monastery sits on the Perfume River 4km from the city centre.

The pagoda grounds include the tower, the main hall, a library, and the Austin car that took monk Thich Quang Duc to his self-immolation in Saigon in 1963 (a significant moment in the protest against the Diem government). Free entry.

Getting there: Bicycle (30 minutes from city centre, flat route along the river), motorbike, or dragon boat.

Perfume River boat trips

Dragon boats operate on the Perfume River for sightseeing tours. The standard route goes upriver to Thien Mu Pagoda and several of the royal tombs, returning downstream. Prices: ₫150,000–300,000 ($6–12) per person for shared tours; private boat hire ₫500,000–1,000,000 ($20–40) per boat.

Sunrise boat trips: The river at dawn — mist on the water, fishers setting nets, the Citadel wall in silhouette — is excellent. Arrange with guesthouse the evening before.

Hue food tour

Hue’s street food is specific and dense. A guided food tour covering the best spots — banh beo stalls, bun bo Hue restaurants, com hen breakfast spots, banh mi Hue — is efficient for first-time visitors. Walking food tours: ₫300,000–600,000 ($12–24) per person.

Truong Tien Bridge

The colonial-era iron bridge (1899) over the Perfume River, built by the same engineers as the Eiffel Tower. Best viewed at dusk from the riverbank when the bridge is illuminated. The walk along the south bank of the river at golden hour is one of the better evening activities in Hue.
