Hue is a strong base for day trips into both the former Demilitarised Zone to the north and the coastal areas to the south. The drive south toward Da Nang crosses Hai Van Pass — one of Vietnam’s best road journeys.

DMZ Tour (Demilitarised Zone)

The former DMZ — the buffer zone that divided North and South Vietnam at the 17th parallel from 1954 to 1975 — lies 60–80km north of Hue. The area contains several significant war sites.

Vinh Moc Tunnels: A network of tunnels where approximately 1,200 civilians lived underground for several years during the most intense American bombing campaigns. Unlike the Cu Chi tunnels near HCMC, Vinh Moc was built for survival rather than warfare — civilian families, including children born underground, sheltered here. The tunnels are large and accessible without crawling. ₫60,000 ($2.40) entry.

Khe Sanh Combat Base: The site of a 77-day siege in 1968. A small museum with aircraft, tanks, and combat material. The landscape of the former base communicates something of what happened here.

Hien Luong Bridge (Ben Hai River): The former border crossing between North and South Vietnam. The bridge is now rebuilt and a memorial site marks where the dividing line ran.

Organised DMZ tours from Hue: ₫300,000–600,000 ($12–24) per person for group tours including transport, guide, and entry fees. Full day. Tours leave at 07:00–08:00.

Bach Ma National Park

A mountain national park 45km south of Hue with a 1,450m peak and a network of waterfalls and forest trails. The French built a hill station here in the 1930s for Hue’s colonial administration — the ruined villas are now part of the park’s atmospheric character.

Rhododendron Falls and Five Lake Cascade: The two most visited waterfall circuits. 3–8km walks through dense subtropical forest.

Do Quyen waterfall: 300m high, reached by a 6km trail from the summit area. One of the largest waterfalls in Vietnam.

Getting there: 45km by road. No direct public transport — hired motorbike (₫200,000/$8 per day) or organised day trip from Hue hostels (₫250,000–400,000 / $10–16 per person).

Lang Co Beach

50km south on the coast, Lang Co is a beach town on a peninsula between a lagoon and the sea. The beach is long, relatively clean, and not heavily developed. Worth a half-day stop.

Hai Van Pass approach: The drive from Hue to Lang Co via the Hai Van Pass road (rather than the tunnel) is outstanding — the pass road climbs to 496m with panoramic views of the coast below. The pass is on the climatic boundary between the north and central Vietnam weather zones.

Hue to Hoi An (full day drive)

The Hue–Hoi An coastal drive via Hai Van Pass, Da Nang, and the marble mountains is one of Vietnam’s great road trips. The 130km journey passes through Lang Co, crosses the pass, descends into Da Nang, and continues south to Hoi An.

By motorbike: 4–5 hours with stops. The pass section (available on the old pass road — not the tunnel) is the highlight. By hired car with driver: ₫1,000,000–1,500,000 ($40–60) for a comfortable day journey.

Practical notes

All major day trips require either a motorbike hire (₫150,000–200,000 / $6–8 per day for a basic automatic) or an organised group tour from Hue hostels or guesthouses. Public transport reaches the DMZ sites only partially — organised tours are the efficient option for the DMZ.
