Vietnam in March: Weather, Regions and What to Do

Turquoise water and white sand beach at Phu Quoc — Vietnam in March

March is one of the strongest all-round months for Vietnam. Every region of the country is accessible, the weather is favourable from north to south, and tourist numbers are manageable outside of the Easter period.

Weather by Region

North (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa): Spring arrives properly. Hanoi warms to 20-25°C with increasing sunshine and low rainfall. Ha Long Bay sees improving visibility as the winter fog lifts — March through May is one of the best windows for cruises, with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. Sapa warms to 15-20°C during the day, and the spring terraces are green with early-season planting beginning in some valleys.

Central (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An): The wet season is definitively over. Da Nang and Hoi An enjoy 24-28°C, low humidity, and minimal rain — the start of a dry season that runs through August. Hue is similar, with clear skies making the Imperial Citadel and royal tombs pleasant to explore on foot. The central coast beaches are clean and uncrowded before the domestic summer rush begins in June.

South (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc): Still in dry season but building toward the hottest period. HCMC hits 30-35°C, with some days touching 37°C. Phu Quoc remains excellent for beaches with calm seas and high visibility for snorkelling around the An Thoi Islands.

What to Do in March

Ha Long Bay: This is the start of Ha Long Bay’s best season. The fog risk that affects December-February cruises drops significantly. Expect clear mornings, warm afternoons, and calmer seas than the summer months. Kayaking through the grottos and swimming from the cruise boats becomes comfortable.

Central coast beaches: Da Nang’s My Khe Beach, Hoi An’s An Bang Beach, and Quy Nhon’s beaches are all in excellent condition. The water is warm enough for swimming (24-26°C) and the beaches are quieter than they will be from June onwards when Vietnamese domestic holidays begin.

Phong Nha Caves: March is within the prime access window. Water levels in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park are dropping, making all major caves accessible. This is a good time for the Dark Cave (swimming and zip-line entry) and multi-day Tu Lan cave trekking expeditions.

Hoi An: Beyond the beach, Hoi An in March is at its most walkable. The heat is not yet oppressive, the ancient town is dry, and cycling through the surrounding rice paddies and villages is comfortable. The monthly Lantern Festival (14th of the lunar month) draws crowds to the riverfront.

Mekong Delta: Dry season continues. The delta’s network of canals and rivers is easy to navigate, and fruit orchards are productive — March is mango season. Cai Rang floating market near Can Tho is busiest between 5am and 8am.

Festivals and Events

Hoi An Lantern Festival: Held monthly on the 14th of the lunar calendar. March’s edition benefits from the dry weather and comfortable temperatures. The Old Town turns off electric lights, and paper lanterns float on the Thu Bon River.

Perfume Pagoda Festival: This major Buddhist pilgrimage near Hanoi runs from the first to the third lunar month (roughly February-April). The journey involves a boat ride up the Yen Stream and a cable car or hike to the Huong Tich Cave temple. It is busiest on weekends.

Practical Tips

  • Pricing: March is shoulder-to-high season. Accommodation in popular areas (Hoi An, Phu Quoc, Ha Long Bay) should be booked 4-6 weeks ahead. Easter weeks see a price bump if Easter falls in late March.
  • Packing: Light summer clothing works across the entire country. A light layer for Ha Long Bay evening breezes and early-morning Sapa treks.
  • Visa: E-visa required for most Western nationals (apply at xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn). Phu Quoc has a separate visa-free arrangement for stays up to 30 days.
  • Getting around: Domestic flights are the fastest option. The Reunification Express train runs the coast. Overnight buses connect most cities cheaply.
