Phu Quoc Airport Transfer Guide: Getting to Duong Dong and Long Beach

Phu Quoc International Airport (IATA: PQC) sits in the centre of Vietnam’s largest island, roughly 10km from the main tourist hub of Duong Dong town and the Long Beach (Bai Truong) hotel strip. The airport is modern, handles direct international flights from several Asian hubs, and the transfer to your accommodation is mercifully short - even by taxi, you will rarely spend more than 25 minutes on the road. Here is how each option compares, with prices as of 2026.

Taxi (~100,000–150,000 VND)

Licensed taxis are the most reliable option straight off the plane, particularly for evening or late-night arrivals. The main operators you will see queuing outside arrivals are Vinasun, Mai Linh, and local Phu Quoc companies including Xanh SM (the VinFast electric taxi fleet now operating on the island). All use meters.

A standard trip to Duong Dong town or Long Beach costs approximately 100,000–150,000 VND as of 2026. Resorts further north - toward Ong Lang Beach, Vinpearl Safari, or the Bai Sao area in the south - run 150,000–250,000 VND depending on distance. Journey time to the main beach strip is 15–20 minutes.

Grab (~80,000–120,000 VND)

Grab works on Phu Quoc, though with a few island-specific quirks worth knowing. Driver availability is meaningfully lower than in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City - at peak times you might wait 10–15 minutes, and at quieter periods a request may go unfulfilled for 5–10 minutes before a driver accepts.

Fares to Long Beach and Duong Dong are approximately 80,000–120,000 VND as of 2026 - modest savings over a metered taxi, but the convenience gap is narrower here than on the mainland. For couples splitting the cost, the fare difference barely registers.

One practical tip: set the app to connect as you clear baggage claim. Mobile signal is good inside the terminal. The designated ride-hailing pickup zone is signposted outside the arrivals exit - do not get into a car in the taxi rank if your driver has asked you to meet there.

Hotel Shuttle (Free–200,000 VND)

Most resorts and a good portion of mid-range hotels on Phu Quoc offer airport pickup, either complimentary or at a fixed per-person rate. Vinpearl, Fusion Resort, Novotel, and Premier Village all include or offer shuttle services. Budget guesthouses and smaller hotels near Duong Dong market typically arrange a shared van for 50,000–100,000 VND per person.

The key step is to confirm before you land: email or message your accommodation 48 hours before arrival with your flight number and expected landing time. They will send a driver with a name board to arrivals. Alternatively, you can book a fixed-price transfer through Kiwitaxi or Welcome Pickups if you want independent confirmation without relying on the hotel. This is the most stress-free option for families with children or travellers with significant luggage, since you step out of arrivals directly into a known vehicle.

Motorbike Taxi / Xe Om (~50,000–80,000 VND)

Motorbike taxis queue outside the arrivals building. They are the cheapest motorised option for a solo traveller with a small bag - expect 50,000–80,000 VND to Long Beach. If you are comfortable on the back of a motorbike and travelling light, this is quick and fine in daylight.

Not recommended for families, those with large luggage, or night arrivals - the roads around the airport are unlit in sections.

Car Hire (~700,000–1,200,000 VND/day)

Phu Quoc is an island where having your own wheels pays dividends. The main road network is paved and relatively simple to navigate, and attractions like Sao Beach in the south, the Vinpearl cable car, Phu Quoc National Park, and the northern coastline are spread across the island. Without a vehicle, you are relying on taxis for every excursion.

Car hire desks operate within the terminal, with options also available through GetRentacar. A compact automatic car costs approximately 700,000–900,000 VND per day as of 2026; larger SUVs run 1,000,000–1,200,000 VND/day, plus fuel. Petrol stations are well distributed across the island.

An International Driving Permit is required. Traffic is lighter than mainland cities - the main challenge is the junction outside Duong Dong market, which gets congested around mealtimes.

Motorbike rental is an alternative popular with independent travellers. Rental shops cluster near the market and airport road, with daily rates from approximately 150,000 VND for a semi-automatic. This is by far the most flexible way to reach the island’s beaches and viewpoints at your own pace. Note that standard travel insurance policies often exclude motorbike accidents unless you hold a valid licence for that vehicle class - check your policy before renting.

Getting to Specific Areas

Long Beach (Bai Truong) is the closest major beach strip to the airport - 10km, 15 minutes by taxi. This is where the bulk of mid-range hotels, restaurants, and beach bars are concentrated.

Duong Dong town sits just north of Long Beach and is the island’s commercial hub. Night market, supermarkets, and the fish sauce factories are all here. Same 10km, 15–20 minute journey from the airport.

Ong Lang Beach (eco-resort area) is 20km from the airport - allow 25–30 minutes. Resorts here include Mango Bay and Mango Lagoon.

Bai Sao in the south is 25–30km and around 30–40 minutes. One of the most photogenic beaches on the island but somewhat isolated without your own transport.
