Coverage City by City
Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)
Coverage in Ho Chi Minh City is excellent across all districts. 4G LTE is fast in District 1, District 3, and Pham Ngu Lao, with 5G available in central areas. Youβll have no connectivity issues at Ben Thanh Market, the War Remnants Museum, or anywhere along Nguyen Hue boulevard. The airport (Tan Son Nhat) and its immediate surroundings are well covered - your eSIM will be active the moment you land.
Hanoi
Hanoi has strong 4G across the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, and Tay Ho districts. Coverage around Noi Bai Airport is solid. Street-level signal is good throughout most of the city, though older buildings in the Old Quarter can block indoor signal on upper floors. 5G is active in central Hanoi.
Da Nang
Da Nang is one of the best-connected cities in Vietnam. The beach strip (My Khe), the city centre, and the road to Hoi An (30km south) all have reliable 4G. Ba Na Hills - the mountain resort above the city - has reasonable coverage despite the altitude. The Marble Mountains and Son Tra Peninsula are both well covered.
Rural North and Highland Areas
This is where provider choice matters most.
Sapa and the Sa Pa mountains: Coverage in Sapa town and the main trekking valleys (Muong Hoa, Cat Cat) is good. Signal drops off in the more remote terraced rice fields - intermittent rather than absent.
Ha Long Bay: On cruise boats and at the major karst formations, 4G is available. Signal improves near Bai Chay town and the harbour area.
Ha Giang Loop: Ha Giang town itself has solid coverage. The mountain loop through Dong Van, Meo Vac, and back is patchy - some passes have no signal at all. This is expected and accepted by most travellers visiting the area. Download Google Maps offline for Ha Giang province before you set off.
Mekong Delta: Cities like Can Tho and My Tho are well covered. On the smaller canals and waterways, signal can drop. The floating markets operate in areas with reasonable 4G.
Con Dao archipelago: This remote island group off the south coast has limited mobile infrastructure. Expect patchy 4G and periods of no signal - which suits most people who go there deliberately. Download offline maps and any essential content before you leave the mainland.
National parks (Cat Tien, Bach Ma, Cuc Phuong): Park entrances and visitor centres typically have signal, but coverage in the forest interior is limited across all three. Pre-download trails and maps before entering.
How to Set Up Your eSIM Before You Travel
- Check eSIM compatibility. Your phone needs to be unlocked and support eSIM. iPhones from XR onwards, Samsung Galaxy S20+, and Google Pixel 3a onwards are all compatible. Check Settings β Mobile Data for an βAdd eSIMβ option.
- Buy your plan. Visit Airalo, select Vietnam, and choose your data size and duration. Payment via card or PayPal.
- Install the eSIM profile. You need a WiFi connection. Scan the QR code in the Airalo app or copy the activation code into Settings β Mobile Data β Add eSIM. Do this at home, your hotel before departure, or the airport lounge - not on the plane.
- Set your data line. In your phone settings, assign the eSIM as your default data line. Keep your home SIM set for calls and SMS. This way you get local data rates without losing your home number.
- Activate on arrival. Most Airalo Vietnam plans activate automatically when your phone connects to the network. If not, toggle the eSIM off and on in settings.
The one rule: Install the profile before you board. You need WiFi to download the eSIM configuration. Inflight WiFi is slow and unreliable - donβt rely on it.
Physical SIM vs eSIM - Is It Worth It?
A local physical SIM from Viettel or Mobifone in Vietnam costs roughly 50,000β150,000 VND (about $2β6) for several gigabytes of data. If price is your only concern, a physical SIM wins on cost.
The case for an eSIM is convenience and time. Registering a tourist SIM requires showing your passport, and the SIM stalls at Tan Son Nhat and Noi Bai can have queues. If your flight lands late, if youβve got onward transport waiting, or if you simply want to step off the plane already connected, an eSIM saves that friction.
