Airport Bus / Route 17 (~50,000 VND)

Bus Route 17 is the cheapest motorised transfer from Phu Bai and makes practical sense for budget travellers arriving during daylight hours. Buses depart from the kerb outside the arrivals exit roughly every 30–45 minutes, with the last service running until approximately 9–10pm (check the timetable board at the stop, as scheduling adjusts seasonally).

The bus follows National Route 1A north into the city, terminating near Tran Hung Dao Street close to the main train station and the south bank of the Perfume River. This puts you within walking distance of the Dong Ba market area and a short xe om ride from most hotels on the north bank near the Imperial Citadel.

Fare is approximately 50,000 VND per person as of 2026. Journey time is 40–50 minutes with stops. The main trade-off is luggage handling - the bus has limited cargo space, and bags go on your lap or underfoot. For solo travellers with a backpack, this is fine. For families or those with large suitcases, a taxi or Grab is more practical.

Grab (~150,000–200,000 VND)

Grab operates reliably at Phu Bai Airport and is the most consistent value option for most travellers. Open the app as you exit the baggage hall - connectivity inside the terminal is good - and select your pickup from the designated ride-hailing zone outside arrivals.

A GrabCar to the city centre costs approximately 150,000–200,000 VND as of 2026. GrabBike (motorbike) fares run lower at around 80,000–100,000 VND but are impractical for more than a day bag. Driver response times at Phu Bai are generally fast - typically 3–8 minutes - because Hue is a mid-sized city with solid Grab penetration.

Journey time is 20–30 minutes to central Hue, depending on traffic. The route north on Route 1A is straightforward and largely free of congestion outside morning and evening rush hours.
