Hue DMZ Tours: What to Expect, Operators & Prices in 2026

The Demilitarised Zone - the DMZ - was the strip of land along the 17th parallel that divided North and South Vietnam from 1954 to 1975. Today it’s one of the most powerful and sobering day trips in the country, accessible as a full-day tour from Hue or as an add-on for travellers passing through on the central coast route. The key sites - Vinh Moc tunnels, Khe Sanh Combat Base, the Hien Luong Bridge, and the Truong Son National Cemetery - sit within 100 kilometres of Hue and are almost always visited on a guided circuit.

What’s Included on a DMZ Tour

Most tours from Hue visit four to six sites in a single day, travelling roughly 200 kilometres round-trip. The standard itinerary covers:

Hien Luong Bridge and Ben Hai River - the river that marked the actual border between North and South. The bridge has been rebuilt but stands at the original crossing point. A small museum and monument mark the site. Most tours spend 20–30 minutes here.

Vinh Moc Tunnels - arguably the most compelling site in the DMZ area. Unlike the Cu Chi Tunnels, which sheltered fighters, Vinh Moc was built to house an entire civilian village of around 300 people who refused to evacuate. The tunnels were dug to three levels, reaching 23 metres below ground, and 17 children were born inside during the war years. Today roughly 600 metres of tunnel are open to visitors - head height throughout, no crawling required. The site is less commercialised than Cu Chi and feels genuinely raw. Allow 1.5–2 hours.

Khe Sanh Combat Base - a former US Marine base that was the site of a 77-day siege in early 1968. The base is now a museum with American aircraft, tanks, and weaponry displayed on the airstrip. A memorial and informational plaques explain the siege and the lives lost. Allow 45–60 minutes. Admission is approximately 40,000 VND as of 2026.

Truong Son National Cemetery - a vast, immaculate military cemetery containing over 10,000 graves of North Vietnamese soldiers who died along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The scale is striking. This is a memorial site - respectful dress and behaviour are expected. Most tours allow 20–30 minutes here.

Some tours also include the Dakrong Bridge, the Ham Rong Bridge, or a drive along sections of the Ho Chi Minh Highway.

Full-Day vs Half-Day

Full-day tours (8–9 hours) cover all major sites - Hien Luong Bridge, Vinh Moc, Khe Sanh, and Truong Son Cemetery. This is the standard format and the one worth choosing if you’re visiting the DMZ only once. Departure is typically 7–8am from Hue, returning by 5–6pm.

Half-day tours exist but are a poor fit for this circuit. The driving distances mean you’d spend most of the time in the vehicle with only 1–2 site visits possible. If time is limited, a full-day is still the better choice - or skip the DMZ and visit another time.

What to Bring

The DMZ is a full day in a minibus and on exposed ground. Pack:

• Water (at least 1.5 litres - the drive north from Hue passes few stops)
• Sun protection (hat, sunscreen) - Khe Sanh airstrip is fully exposed
• Comfortable shoes - Vinh Moc involves uneven ground
• A light layer for the tunnels - underground temperature is noticeably cooler in winter months (November–March)

Best Time to Visit

February to August is the most practical window from Hue. The central coast experiences its heaviest rain from September to January, and while the sites remain open, driving conditions on the highway north can be poor and some tunnel sections may flood.

April and May are warm but dry - good conditions for all outdoor sites. Arrive early at Khe Sanh (before 10am) to beat the midday heat on the airstrip.

Getting There Without a Tour

It’s possible to hire a motorbike or car from Hue independently, but the distance (80–100km to Vinh Moc) and the spread of sites across a 50-kilometre stretch of Highway 1 and the coastal road make self-guided visits logistically demanding. Most travellers find the guided day-tour format more practical. If you want more control, a private driver is the better middle ground.
