Hanoiβs accommodation divides across three main areas: the Old Quarter, which gives you immediate access to the 36 guild streets, Hoan Kiem Lake, and the night food scene; the French Quarter and Ba Dinh District, which is quieter and closer to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex; and West Lake (Tay Ho), which is calmer and more residential, favoured by expats and travellers staying longer than a week. For most first-time visitors, the Old Quarter offers the best combination of atmosphere, walkability, and value.
The Old Quarter: Character and Convenience
The Old Quarter sits north and west of Hoan Kiem Lake. Its narrow lanes are loud with motorbike traffic during the day and fill with street food vendors in the evening. Hotels here range from genuinely characterful boutique properties to cramped budget guesthouses squeezed into shophouse buildings. The trade-off for staying here is noise β even mid-range properties can suffer from motorbike traffic until midnight.
Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi at 15 Ngo Quyen Street, just east of Hoan Kiem Lake, is Vietnamβs most famous colonial hotel β operating since 1901 and renovated to five-star standard. The historic wing (the Metropole Wing) commands the highest prices, from $300 to $500 per night; the newer Opera Wing starts around $200. The hotelβs wartime bomb shelter, swimming pool, and Le Beaulieu French restaurant are each worth visiting on their own terms.
La Siesta Hotels operates several boutique properties in the Old Quarter under the La Siesta brand, including the Premium and Classic tiers. Rooms run $70 to $130 per night across the different properties. The Premium version on Lo Su Street is the most polished; all include breakfast, spa access, and the reliable service that has made this the most recommended mid-range chain in Hanoi. Book the specific property by name rather than the chain, as locations and room quality vary.
La Passion Hotel on Hang Bong Street (one of the more atmospheric guild streets) offers smaller boutique rooms from $55 to $80 per night with a rooftop bar and genuinely helpful staff. A strong choice for travellers who prioritise location over size.
Around Hoan Kiem Lake
The southeast side of Hoan Kiem Lake β along Dinh Tien Hoang and Ba Trieu β puts you equidistant between the Old Quarter and the French Quarter. This is a quieter location than the Old Quarter proper, with better air circulation from the lake.
Several mid-range hotels in this zone price from $60 to $120 per night. The advantage over Old Quarter addresses is slightly less street noise and easier taxi/Grab access (the small lanes of the Old Quarter can delay drivers). The central location means Ngoc Son Temple, the Hanoi Opera House, and Hoan Kiem Lake are each under a five-minute walk.
French Quarter and Ba Dinh
The French Quarter around the Hanoi Opera House (south of Hoan Kiem Lake, roughly Trang Tien and Ngo Quyen Streets) is where Hanoiβs upmarket dining and business hotel scene concentrates. Hotels here tend towards international business chains rather than boutique properties.
InterContinental Hanoi Westlake is technically at West Lake rather than the French Quarter, but it is the second most prominent five-star option in the city after the Metropole. Built on stilts over the western edge of West Lake, rooms start from $130 to $180 per night. The lake-view rooms and rooftop restaurant are the propertyβs strongest features.
Hanoi Daewoo Hotel on Kim Ma Street in Ba Dinh is an older five-star property that offers competitive rates ($90 to $150 per night) and is positioned between the Old Quarter and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex β convenient if visiting the mausoleum is a priority.
West Lake (Tay Ho): Quieter Long-Stay Option
West Lake is about 4km north of the Old Quarter, a 10-minute Grab car ride ($2 to $3). The area is dominated by expat residents, lakeside cafes, and international restaurants. It is quieter than anywhere in the centre and suits travellers staying more than a few nights who prefer a residential atmosphere over tourist-zone energy.
Boutique guesthouses and small hotels around Xuan Dieu Road (the main restaurant strip on the south shore) price from $50 to $100 per night. The trade-off is that everything historical requires a Grab ride.
Budget: Old Quarter Hostels
The Old Quarterβs budget market is well-developed. Dorm beds in reputable hostels cost $8 to $12 per night; private rooms with en-suite bathroom run from $25 to $45. The Hang Be and Luong Ngoc Quyen area has the highest concentration of backpacker guesthouses.
Most hostels organise onward travel: Ha Long Bay cruises, overnight trains to Sapa, and Ninh Binh day trips can all be booked through hostel travel desks at broadly similar prices to independent booking, with the convenience of pickup from the hostel door.
Checking In: Practical Notes
Hanoiβs Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) is 35km north of the city β one of the longer airport-to-centre transfers in Southeast Asia. A Grab car from the airport to the Old Quarter costs approximately $9 to $14 and takes 40 to 60 minutes in normal traffic (longer during rush hours, particularly 7am to 9am and 5pm to 7pm).
The minibus (Vietnam Airlines Shuttle Bus) connects the airport to 1 Quang Trung in the Old Quarter area for 45,000 VND ($1.80) but picks up en route and can take 90 minutes.
Hotel check-in time is typically 2pm; early check-in (from 10am) is often accommodated at no extra charge when rooms are available β worth asking at boutique properties that have checked-out guests from the previous night.
When to Book
Hanoi is busiest from October to April when the weather is coolest and clearest. Tet (Vietnamese New Year, late January or February) sees prices spike 20 to 40 percent and availability collapse across all categories β book 6 to 8 weeks in advance for Tet travel. The summer months (June to August) are hot and occasionally rainy but offer the most room availability and the lowest rates.
