Where to Stay in Hoi An 2026: Old Town vs Beach vs Cam Nam

· Updated · 5 min read City Guide
Boutique hotel, Hoi An

Hoi An accommodation divides into three main zones with different experiences. The old town area is most convenient for sightseeing and food; the beach is better for morning swims and a relaxed pace; Cam Nam Island offers quiet without isolation. All three zones are connected by bicycle in 10–30 minutes on flat roads.

Ancient Town area (most convenient)

Within walking distance of the old quarter, the Japanese Covered Bridge, and the riverside restaurants along Bach Dang Street. The old town itself does not allow new accommodation — the heritage buildings are maintained as homes, shops, and museums — so hotels are in the streets immediately surrounding the old quarter.

Best streets: Nguyen Phuc Chu, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Le Loi, and Phan Boi Chau all have strong options across the price range.

Hotels in this zone: Anantara Hoi An Resort (from ₫2,500,000 / $100 as of 2026), La Siesta Hoi An Resort (from ₫800,000 / $32), Pho Hoi Ancient House Resort (from ₫900,000 / $36), Little Hoi An Boutique Hotel (from ₫700,000 / $28), Hoi An Historic Hotel (from ₫400,000 / $16), family-run guesthouses (from ₫250,000 / $10).

Best for: First-time visitors, short stays, food-focused travellers, evening lantern atmosphere. Walking to restaurants, tailor shops, and heritage sites is effortless.

Trade-offs: Streets near the old quarter can be noisy at night from the tourist restaurants and bars, particularly along Bach Dang and Nguyen Thai Hoc. Choose accommodation one or two streets back from the main strip for quieter evenings. Properties on the river side of Bach Dang command higher prices.

An Bang Beach (4 km east)

A different experience from the old town — the accommodation here is beach-focused. Smaller guesthouses, a handful of boutique properties, and some homestays sit close to An Bang Beach, which has a relaxed bar and restaurant scene along the beachfront.

Hotels in this zone: An Bang Seaside Village Resort (from ₫800,000 / $32 as of 2026), An Bang Beach Hideaway Homestay (from ₫400,000 / $16), budget guesthouses (from ₫200,000 / $8).

Best for: Beach-focused travellers, morning swimmers, couples, and travellers who prefer a quieter base away from the old town tourist density.

Trade-offs: Distance from the old town is the main drawback. A bicycle ride (4 km, 20–30 minutes on flat roads through rice paddies) covers it, but you need to commit to the bike or a Grab ride (approximately ₫40,000–60,000 / $1.60–2.40) for evening old town visits. Restaurant options at the beach are more limited and slightly more expensive than the old town area.

The beach itself: An Bang is a wide, clean beach with a line of bar-restaurants along the sand. Sun lounger rental costs approximately ₫50,000–100,000 ($2–4) per day, or free with a minimum food or drink order. The swimming is good from April to October; rougher surf from November to March.

Cam Nam Island (quietest option)

A small island south of the old town connected by a pedestrian bridge (An Hoi Bridge). Quieter and cheaper than the town side, with a semi-rural feel despite being 10 minutes walk from the old quarter.

Hotels in this zone: Several guesthouses and small hotels with garden settings. Prices from ₫200,000–600,000 ($8–24) as of 2026.

Best for: Travellers who want quiet nights without paying resort prices, budget travellers, and longer stays.

Trade-offs: Fewer restaurants on the island itself — you will cross the bridge to the old town for most meals. The island has some local restaurants and cafes, but the selection is limited compared to the town side.

Cam Thanh (rice paddy setting)

A newer accommodation area to the south-east of the old town, in the rice paddy countryside. Several mid-range and boutique hotels have opened here, offering a rural Vietnamese atmosphere with shuttle service to the old town (typically 10 minutes by hotel shuttle).

Hotels in this zone: Hoi An Silk Village Resort (from ₫800,000 / $32 as of 2026), plus smaller homestays in the rice paddy area.

Best for: Couples wanting a romantic setting, travellers who enjoy the countryside atmosphere, and those who want a pool in peaceful surroundings.

Trade-offs: Not walkable to the old town — you rely on hotel shuttle, bicycle (15–20 minutes), or Grab.

Practical notes

Bicycles: Nearly all Hoi An accommodation provides free or very cheap bicycle rental (₫30,000–50,000 / $1.20–2 per day). Cycling is the primary transport mode in the town — the flat terrain and short distances make it ideal. Most hotels have secure bicycle parking.

Flooding (October–November): Flooding in Hoi An is a real and occasionally severe risk, particularly in late October and early November. The low-lying streets near the Thu Bon River flood first. Some accommodation areas are more affected than others. Before booking during this period, check with the hotel about historical flood levels and whether the property is on elevated ground or upper floors.

Peak season booking: July–August is the peak domestic and international tourist season. Hoi An is one of Vietnam’s most popular destinations, and well-regarded properties sell out well in advance. Book at least two weeks ahead during peak months. The shoulder months of March–May and September–October offer better availability and lower rates.

Tailoring district access: If custom tailoring is a priority (Hoi An is famous for made-to-measure clothing), stay near the old town. Multiple fittings over 2–3 days are standard for quality tailoring, and walking distance to the tailor shop saves significant time. The main tailor streets are in and around the old quarter.

Da Nang airport access: Da Nang International Airport is approximately 30 km north (30–45 minutes by car). Hotel airport transfer costs approximately ₫300,000–500,000 ($12–20) each way. Grab from the airport costs approximately ₫250,000–350,000 ($10–14). Some hotels include airport transfer in the room rate — confirm when booking.
