Tan Son Nhat International Airport (IATA: SGN) is one of Southeast Asiaβs busiest airports and, unusually for a major gateway, sits almost entirely within the city it serves. District 1 β the commercial heart of Ho Chi Minh City, home to most hotels, the Ben Thanh area, and the waterfront β is just 7 to 10 kilometres from the terminal. On a clear run, you can be at your hotel in under 20 minutes. During peak traffic hours, the same journey can take 45β60 minutes. This makes transfer choice less about distance and more about timing.
Airport Layout
Tan Son Nhat has two terminals: Domestic (Terminal 1) and International (Terminal 2). International arrivals exit through Terminal 2. Ground transport β including the taxi queue, Grab pickup zone, and bus stops β is immediately outside the arrivals exit. The airport is undergoing ongoing capacity expansion as of 2026, so signage around the terminals changes periodically; follow the green βTransportβ signs on exit.
Metered Taxi β Reliable and Plentiful
Licensed metered taxis are the default choice for most arrivals at SGN. Established operators include Mai Linh (green cars) and Vinasun (white/blue cars) β both are metered, regulated, and generally honest. Fares as of 2026:
- To District 1 (Ben Thanh / Bui Vien): approximately VND 80,000β130,000
- To District 3: approximately VND 100,000β150,000
- To Binh Thanh District: approximately VND 90,000β140,000
- To District 7 (Phu My Hung): approximately VND 120,000β180,000
Journey times range from 20 minutes (off-peak) to 50 minutes during morning and evening rush hours. Avoid taxi drivers who approach you inside the terminal, offer a flat rate, or claim their meter is broken β these are common scams. Always insist the meter starts.
A toll of approximately VND 10,000β20,000 may be added for routes using the airport overpass. This is normal and charged at cost.
Grab β The Local Favourite
Grab (the regional Uber equivalent) is extremely well-established in Ho Chi Minh City and operates with a designated pickup zone outside Terminal 2. The app shows the fare before you commit, and most drivers accept in-app payment, reducing the need for cash. You will need mobile data β a Vietnam eSIM is the fastest way to get connected before landing.
Typical Grab (GrabCar) fares to District 1 as of 2026:
- Standard car: approximately VND 60,000β110,000 (surge may push higher during peak hours)
- GrabBike (motorbike): approximately VND 20,000β40,000 β extremely cheap but not practical with luggage
Grab is often 15β25% cheaper than metered taxis to central districts. Wait times at the pickup zone are usually under 10 minutes.
Public Bus No. 152 β Ultra-Budget Option
Bus No. 152 operates a direct route from Tan Son Nhat to Ben Thanh Market (central District 1). Departures are frequent (every 10β15 minutes, roughly 05:00β22:00) and the fare is approximately VND 5,000β6,000 per person as of 2026 β negligible cost by any standard.
The trade-offs: no air conditioning on all vehicles, limited luggage space, and stops at multiple points along the route adding 20β30 minutes to total journey time. For light packers heading to central District 1 on a strict budget, it is a viable option. For most international arrivals with checked bags, it is impractical.
No Metro to the Airport (as of 2026)
Ho Chi Minh Cityβs much-discussed metro expansion remains incomplete as of mid-2026. Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh to Suoi Tien) became partially operational in late 2024 but does not connect to Tan Son Nhat. Metro Line 2, which is planned to run via the airport, is in construction with no confirmed operational date in 2026. For now, all airport transfers must be by road.
Private Transfer β Fixed Price Door-to-Door
For travellers arriving on long-haul flights, with family groups, or heading to addresses outside District 1, a pre-booked private transfer removes the stress of the taxi queue and guarantees a price in advance. Operators including Kiwitaxi, Welcome Pickups, and GetTransfer offer English-language booking and include flight tracking.

- Standard sedan to District 1: from approximately USD 8β15
- Minivan for groups or extra luggage: from approximately USD 15β25
Given the short distance from the airport, private transfers are notably affordable relative to other major Asian gateways. If cost per person matters, a private minivan for four people often works out cheaper than four individual taxis.
Day Trips and Onward Travel from Tan Son Nhat
To the Mekong Delta: Tour operators run day trips to My Tho and Ben Tre from Ho Chi Minh City. These depart from the city centre, not the airport. If you land in the morning, a transfer to your hotel and then a same-day Mekong tour is feasible.
To Vung Tau: Hydrofoil ferries depart from the Bach Dang Ferry Terminal in District 1 (~1.5 hours). Take a transfer to the city centre first.
To Da Lat or Nha Trang: Overnight sleeper buses depart from Pham Ngu Lao Street (central District 1). The most comfortable option is a private car transfer β particularly for Da Lat, where the mountain road is easier in daylight.
Practical Tips
- Beware of fixed-rate touts. The most persistent scam at SGN involves unofficial drivers outside arrivals quoting a βfixed rateβ that sounds reasonable but exceeds metered fares by 2β4x. Use the official taxi queue or Grab.
- Carry small denomination dong. Road tolls are paid in cash; VND 10,000β20,000 notes help.
- Traffic peaks hard at school hours and evenings. 07:00β08:30 and 17:00β19:30 on weekdays are the worst windows. If your flight arrives during these times, budget an extra 30 minutes.
- District 1 is compact. Once in the district, walking between Ben Thanh, Bui Vien Street, and the river is feasible. You only need the taxi for the airport leg.
