Mekong Delta Day Trip from Ho Chi Minh City: Boats, Villages and What to Book

The Mekong Delta - the southern third of Vietnam, where the Mekong River splits into nine branches before reaching the South China Sea - is one of the most productive agricultural regions in Southeast Asia. From Ho Chi Minh City, you can reach the outer edge of the delta in 90 minutes, and a day trip gives you enough time to see the canals, water markets, and island villages that define life here without an overnight stay.

My Tho and Ben Tre (70–90 km from HCMC)

My Tho is the capital of Tien Giang province and the most common starting point for Mekong day trips. The town itself is a working Vietnamese port city with nothing especially distinctive for tourists, but the islands in the Tien Giang branch of the river - Dragon, Unicorn, Phoenix, and Tortoise Islands - are the standard day-trip zone.

A typical My Tho tour departs HCMC at 7:30–8am, arrives at My Tho pier by 9:30am, boards a motorboat to Unicorn Island (Con Lan), visits a coconut candy factory and an orchard, then transfers to a narrow sampan canal for a 30–45 minute paddle through dense nipa palm growth. Lunch (fresh fish, fried river shrimp, elephant ear fish) at a riverside restaurant follows, before the return coach to HCMC arrives back around 4–5pm.

Ben Tre is a 30-minute ferry or road crossing further south. Tours that include Ben Tre typically follow a similar format but add a visit to a coconut shell workshop and a more extensive section of the Cho Lach Canal network, which is narrower and quieter than the My Tho island channels. The coconut industry - Ben Tre province produces 30–40% of Vietnam’s coconut output - is more visible here, and workshops demonstrating coconut oil, candy, and shell handicraft production are the dominant stop.

Combined My Tho + Ben Tre tours are common and cover both destinations in a single day. Budget slightly more time (return to HCMC closer to 6–7pm) and check that the tour includes an actual sampan canal section rather than just motorboat transfers between stops.

Can Tho and the Cai Rang Floating Market (170 km from HCMC)

Can Tho is the largest city in the Mekong Delta and the logical base for anyone staying overnight. But it is bookable as a very long day trip from HCMC (approximately 2.5–3 hours each way by minibus). The main draw is the Cai Rang floating market, which operates from approximately 5am to 10am daily - meaning Can Tho day trips typically depart HCMC by 4–5am to reach the market before it winds down.

The Cai Rang market is the largest wholesale floating market in the Mekong Delta. Produce boats (vegetables, tropical fruits, durian, watermelon) anchor on the canal and display their goods on tall poles - a practice that makes the product visible from a distance, so buyers know what each boat is selling without needing to manoeuvre close. The scale and early-morning light make it one of the most photographed scenes in southern Vietnam.

What a Good Mekong Day Trip Includes

When comparing tour listings, look for these specific elements rather than just price:

• Sampan canoe section: A flat-bottomed wooden canoe through a narrow palm canal is the defining experience. Some cheap tours skip this or substitute a second motorboat leg.
• Working stop (not tourist market): The best operators stop at a genuine coconut candy or rice paper workshop with a local family, not a commercial centre that exists solely for tourists.
• Included lunch: Should be riverside with fresh Mekong fish (elephant ear fish/cá tai tượng or catfish). Vague tour descriptions that say “lunch not included” or “own arrangements” suggest a budget cut.
• English-speaking guide: Standard on all reputable tours. Ask to confirm guide language if booking last-minute via a local agent.

Practical Information

What to bring: Sunscreen, insect repellent (especially for canal sections), cash in VND for any drinks or snacks at workshop stops. Motion sickness medication if you are susceptible to boat movement.

What not to bring: Valuable items or electronics not protected by waterproof bags. Sampan canoes sit low in the water and can get splashed in wet season.

Booking timing: Day trips to My Tho and Ben Tre operate year-round and rarely sell out except over Vietnamese New Year. Can Tho tours for the floating market can book out during peak season (December–March) - book 2–3 days ahead.

Combining with Cu Chi Tunnels: Some operators run combined Cu Chi Tunnels + Mekong Delta itineraries in a single day (depart 7am, return 7pm). These tours are very long and the Mekong section is often abbreviated. A better approach is to dedicate separate days to each.

Getting there independently: Public buses to My Tho depart from Mien Tay Bus Station in HCMC every 20–30 minutes (approximately 90,000 VND, 2 hours). You can hire a boat at My Tho pier (negotiate directly, budget 400,000–600,000 VND for a 2-hour private boat). This works but requires Vietnamese-language negotiation skills for the boat hire.
