My Tho and Ben Tre (70–90 km from HCMC)

My Tho is the capital of Tien Giang province and the most common starting point for Mekong day trips. The town itself is a working Vietnamese port city with nothing especially distinctive for tourists, but the islands in the Tien Giang branch of the river - Dragon, Unicorn, Phoenix, and Tortoise Islands - are the standard day-trip zone.

A typical My Tho tour departs HCMC at 7:30–8am, arrives at My Tho pier by 9:30am, boards a motorboat to Unicorn Island (Con Lan), visits a coconut candy factory and an orchard, then transfers to a narrow sampan canal for a 30–45 minute paddle through dense nipa palm growth. Ben Tre is a 30-minute ferry or road crossing further south.
