Most trips to Vietnam never need an embassy. If something does go wrong, such as a lost passport, an arrest or a serious accident, knowing the right office saves hours. Vietnam’s diplomatic missions are concentrated in Hanoi, with a smaller set of consulates in Ho Chi Minh City. Confirm opening hours and phone numbers on your government’s official travel page before you travel, as these details change (details as of 2026).

Emergency approach
For immediate danger, call police 113, fire 114 or ambulance 115 (or ask your hotel to). Then contact your embassy. The UK Hanoi line is listed as the route to a consular officer outside office hours, and Canada states its Hanoi mission offers 24/7 emergency consular help. Keep a photo of your passport and your insurer’s emergency number handy; our travel insurance guide explains what to carry, and is Vietnam safe covers common risks.
What embassies can and cannot do
They can issue emergency travel documents, help you contact family, give lists of local lawyers and doctors, and visit you if detained. They cannot pay bills, get you out of jail, pay fines, or override Vietnamese law and immigration rules.
Lost or stolen passport
- Report the loss or theft at the nearest police station (công an) and get a written report.
- Contact your embassy or consulate for an emergency travel document, usually needing photos, ID copies and the police report.
- Visit the local immigration office to arrange an exit permit, as you need valid entry stamps or visa records to leave. Processing can take several days, so allow time before flights.
- Cancel stolen cards and notify your insurer.
