Vietnam’s domestic air routes have entered their low-season pricing window, with fares falling 30–50% compared to the National Day holiday peak (September 2–5) and the preceding summer period. For travellers already in Vietnam or planning an imminent arrival, the timing is good.
What Changed and Why
National Day on September 2 is one of Vietnam’s busiest travel periods, with domestic demand surging as Vietnamese families and tourists compete for seats. Once the holiday ends, demand drops sharply and airlines respond with lower fares.
September and October are also slower months for international arrivals to Vietnam, caught between the southern hemisphere summer surge and the November–December peak when weather improves across the country. Airlines fill seats by cutting prices.
Routes Affected
The fare drops apply across all major domestic routes operated by Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways, and VietJet Air. Key routes seeing the largest reductions include:
- Hanoi (HAN) ↔ Ho Chi Minh City (SGN): Vietnam’s busiest corridor
- Ho Chi Minh City ↔ Da Nang: Popular for central Vietnam access
- Hanoi ↔ Da Lat and Nha Trang: Secondary leisure routes
On the flagship Hanoi–Ho Chi Minh City route, promotional fares at the lowest end have been reported below 500,000 VND (approximately USD 20) for economy class, though these sell quickly and carry restrictions on luggage.
Caveats to Be Aware Of
Low fares often come with conditions: the cheapest tickets are typically non-refundable, carry no checked baggage allowance (important for longer itineraries), and change at short notice based on demand. We recommend checking the full fare conditions before booking.
Weather in September–October is also variable. Central Vietnam faces its pre-typhoon season, with some disruption risk around Da Nang, Hoi An, and Hue. Northern Vietnam (including Hanoi) is generally pleasant in October — dry and cooler than summer. Ho Chi Minh City sees continued afternoon rain through October.
