Da Nang wrapped up Southeast Asia’s largest multisport event week on 11 May 2026, closing out the inaugural VNG IRONMAN Vietnam full-distance race alongside the 10th edition of VNG IRONMAN 70.3 Da Nang. More than 4,700 athletes from 91 countries and territories competed across the five-day event - the highest participation count ever recorded for an IRONMAN event in Vietnam.

The race results

The full-distance course covers a 3.8 km open-water swim in the East Sea off My Khe Beach, a 180 km cycling leg along Da Nang’s coastal roads and through the Hai Van Pass mountain route, and a 42 km marathon finish along the beachfront strip. Uzbekistan’s Andrey Sharipov won the men’s race in 8 hours 45 minutes 47 seconds. American athlete Hope Hoffman took the women’s title in 9 hours 49 minutes 23 seconds.

In the concurrent IRONMAN 70.3 (half-distance) race, Rodrigo Acevedo from the Isle of Man topped the men’s standings in 4:02:22, while Colombia’s Daniela Rodriguez won the women’s division in 4:50:04. Vietnamese athlete Lam Quang Nhat placed second in the 70.3 men’s race - a strong result that drew significant home support from spectators along the course.

What this means for travellers

Sports tourism is now a notable driver of visitor traffic to Da Nang beyond the city’s beach and food appeal. Hotels along the My Khe and Non Nuoc strips and restaurants in the Han River district reported strong occupancy throughout race week, with average nightly rates during the event running 40–60% above standard off-peak pricing. The economic impact of 4,700 athletes - many travelling with family or support crews - was substantial across the city’s accommodation, transport, and dining sectors.

For spectators, the race offers a compelling free viewing experience. The swim start on My Khe Beach is accessible to the public, and the marathon run along Tran Hung Dao Street passes through areas with restaurants and bars that set up spectator sections on race morning. The atmosphere from around 6am until the 12-hour mark is consistently described by previous attendees as one of the more electric spectator events in Southeast Asian sport.

Vietnam in May is generally a favourable period on the central coast - Da Nang sits in the rain shadow of the Hai Van Pass at this time of year, with warm days and lower humidity than the peak of summer. The Da Nang International Fireworks Festival begins on 30 May, giving travellers arriving later in the month a second major spectacle to plan around.

Getting to Da Nang in 2026

Air access to Da Nang International Airport (DAD) has expanded considerably this year. VietJet launched a new Da Nang–Jakarta route in late April, and Vietnam Airlines increased European capacity from London Heathrow. Direct flights operate from Seoul Incheon, Tokyo, Singapore, and Bangkok, as well as domestic connections to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Looking ahead to 2027

With the inaugural full-distance edition now complete and athlete numbers breaking records, Da Nang is expected to host both IRONMAN events annually going forward. The 2026 race sold out its international athlete slots well in advance of the start date - travellers interested in competing in 2027 should monitor the IRONMAN website for slot release announcements, typically eight to ten months before the event, and register as soon as slots open.
