The north and south of Phu Quoc are distinctly different in character, infrastructure, and visitor experience. Most travellers stay on the west coast around Long Beach — but understanding what’s actually in each part of the island helps with planning.
The south (Sao Beach, An Thoi, resort corridor)
The southern third of the island has Sao Beach — the island’s best sand — and An Thoi port for island hopping and diving. The luxury resort corridor runs from mid-Long Beach toward the south.
Stay here if: Your priorities are beach quality, diving, or island hopping. The JW Marriott and Salinda Resort are in this zone.
Practical realities: 20–30km from Duong Dong town means Grab, taxi, or motorbike for any town visit. The south is quieter — limited independent restaurants outside resort premises. Fully self-contained resort holidays work well here; independent budget travel is harder.
The middle (Long Beach north, Duong Dong town)
The most densely serviced area. Long Beach’s northern section is walking distance from Duong Dong town, the night market, and the main restaurant and bar concentration. The international airport is 5km north of town.
Stay here if: You want access to restaurants, nightlife (limited but present), and the night market without constant taxi costs. Good for independent travellers and shorter stays.
Practical realities: The beach here is good in dry season but less spectacular than Sao Beach. The area has the most tourist infrastructure — which means convenience but also more crowds and noise.
The north (Ong Lang, Ganh Dau, Cua Can)
The north coast has a handful of boutique resorts at Ong Lang Beach (quieter, good snorkelling), and beyond that the terrain becomes rural — pepper farms, fish sauce producers, Cua Can river mouth, and the Vinpearl complex near the northern tip.
Stay here if: You want the boutique-resort experience at Ong Lang, or you’re specifically visiting the northern attractions (Ganh Dau, Vinpearl Safari). Ong Lang is the best quiet-beach alternative to the main Long Beach strip.
Practical realities: The north of the island beyond Ong Lang has limited services. The Vinpearl resort complex is a self-contained world — staying there means everything is on-site. The far north (Ganh Dau) requires a full motorbike circuit day to visit meaningfully.
Recommended approach by trip type
First visit, 4–7 nights: Stay on Long Beach north or Ong Lang. Day trip to Sao Beach (motorbike or Grab). Day trip to An Thoi for island hopping. Evening at the Duong Dong night market.
Diving focus: Stay near Long Beach with a dive operator, take the daily boat to An Thoi.
Honeymoon/luxury: JW Marriott or Salinda (south). Use resort facilities and arrange transfers for the night market evening.
Budget backpacking: Long Beach north guesthouses. Motorbike rental for Sao Beach and island circuit.
