Where to Stay in Ninh Binh 2026: Tam Coc vs Ninh Binh Town
The accommodation choice in Ninh Binh is essentially between Tam Coc village and Ninh Binh town. They’re 7km apart. The right choice depends on what you want from the stay.
Tam Coc village (recommended)
Tam Coc has developed into the main tourist base for the province. Guesthouses and small hotels line the road from Ninh Binh town to Tam Coc, and the village itself has expanded considerably. Staying here puts you 5 minutes from the boat pier, close to the Mua Cave viewpoint, and within cycling distance of Trang An.
Pros: Walkable to the main attractions. Atmospheric in the evening when the tour groups have left. Many guesthouses organise cycling routes, boat trips, and day tours. Good local restaurants along the main road.
Cons: The village is firmly on the tourist circuit — prices reflect this. Can feel a bit manufactured during high season when tour buses fill the parking areas.
Price range:
- Basic guesthouses: ₫200,000–400,000 ($8–16) per night
- Mid-range guesthouses with pool or garden: ₫400,000–900,000 ($16–36)
- Boutique eco-lodges and resorts: ₫900,000–3,000,000 ($36–120)
Ninh Binh town
Ninh Binh city (population ~130,000) is the provincial capital, 7km from Tam Coc. It’s a regular Vietnamese city with a bus station, train station, markets, and local restaurants. Accommodation is cheaper and more basic than Tam Coc.
Pros: Cheaper. More local feel — eating at Ninh Binh town restaurants means eating at local prices with local clientele. Direct bus and train connections from Hanoi arrive here.
Cons: Requires transport to reach the main sights (bicycle or taxi). Less atmosphere than Tam Coc for evenings. Not within walking distance of attractions.
Price range:
- Budget guesthouses: ₫150,000–350,000 ($6–14)
- Mid-range hotels: ₫350,000–700,000 ($14–28)
What to look for
Location relative to attractions: In Tam Coc, the boat pier is the key landmark — guesthouses within 1km of the pier are most convenient. For Trang An, staying at the far Trang An end of the main road puts you closer to that attraction.
Bicycle availability: A guesthouse that provides or rents bicycles is significantly more useful than one that doesn’t. Ask before booking.
Breakfast included: Many Ninh Binh guesthouses include a simple Vietnamese breakfast. The quality varies but any breakfast is useful given that options before 8am can be limited.
Booking: Ninh Binh fills up quickly during peak seasons (September–October rice harvest, Tết, Vietnamese public holidays). Book at least a week ahead in these periods.
