Ninh Binh is one of the best cycling destinations in northern Vietnam. The landscape between the limestone formations is flat — rice paddies, small villages, river crossings — and the roads in the Tam Coc and Trang An area carry little traffic. A bicycle is the ideal way to connect the main sights and see the landscape at a pace that suits it.
Bike rental
Rent bicycles from guesthouses in Tam Coc for ₫50,000–100,000 per day ($2–4). Most guesthouses have bicycles available; if yours doesn’t, it can point you to a nearby rental. City-style bikes are the standard — flat landscape, no need for anything more technical.
Electric motorbikes are increasingly available for rent for those who want to cover more distance: ₫150,000–250,000/day ($6–10).
The main cycling routes
Tam Coc to Mua Cave (6km round trip)
The most popular short route. From the boat pier at Tam Coc, follow the Ngo Dong River road south for 3km to the Mua Cave viewpoint. The rice paddy scenery along the river is what the postcards are made of. The return brings you back the same way or via a slight detour through Mua Cave village.
Time: 30–45 minutes each way, plus time at Mua Cave. Terrain: Flat, good road surface. Suitable for all fitness levels.
Tam Coc to Trang An (8km one way)
From Tam Coc, the road to Trang An passes through rice fields with limestone peaks on all sides. The route is not scenic the whole way — there’s some main road — but the Trang An approach road is beautiful. A round trip is 16km; consider taking a xe om back if you’d rather not cycle the return.
Time: 45–60 minutes each way. Terrain: Mostly flat, some slightly uneven surfaces on smaller roads.
Tam Coc to Bich Dong Pagoda (4km round trip)
A short ride from Tam Coc to the pagoda built into a limestone hillside. The road is quiet and the approach through the karst landscape is beautiful.
Time: 20 minutes each way plus time at the pagoda.
Long loop: Tam Coc – Hoa Lu – Trang An
A more ambitious half-day loop covering the main sights. From Tam Coc, ride to Hoa Lu (7km north), then to Trang An (8km), then back to Tam Coc. Total approximately 30km — manageable in 4–5 hours with stops.
Time: Full half-day. Terrain: Mostly flat with some inclines near Hoa Lu. Suitable for those with basic fitness.
What to bring
- Water: Carry at least 1 litre. The cycle routes pass through villages with small shops, but not consistently. Vietnamese heat requires more water than you think.
- Sunscreen and a hat: Essential.
- Cash: For entry fees at Mua Cave and Bich Dong, and for drinks at village shops.
- Phone with maps: Download the Google Maps area offline before going. Mobile data works throughout the area.
Best time to cycle
Early morning (6–9am) before the heat builds. The light at this time also makes the rice paddy scenery more beautiful — long shadows, mist on the paddies in autumn. Avoid cycling at midday May–September when the heat is at its worst.
The autumn (September–October) rice harvest season makes the paddies golden-yellow and is the best visual time for cycling.
