Ninh Binh itself has enough to fill 2–3 days, but for those extending from a Hanoi base or connecting south, here are the practical day trip and connection options.
Cuc Phuong National Park
Vietnam’s oldest national park (1962), 45km northwest of Ninh Binh town. Primary forest, impressive biodiversity, and two rescue centres that are the main draws for visitors.
Endangered Primate Rescue Centre: Run by Fauna & Flora International. Houses langurs (black langur, grey-shanked douc — several critically endangered species) and slow lorises rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. The animals are kept in large forested enclosures and managed for eventual release where possible. This is one of the best wildlife experiences in northern Vietnam — not a zoo in any standard sense.
Turtle Conservation Centre: Operates separately within the park. Freshwater turtles rescued from the wildlife trade, breeding programs for critically endangered species.
Forest: The park has ancient trees — a 1,000-year-old tree near the park centre has a circumference of 25m. Trekking trails vary in difficulty.
Practical: 45km from Ninh Binh (no direct public transport — hire a motorbike or car from a guesthouse for ₫300,000–500,000 return with driver). Park entry ₫80,000 per adult. Primate centre additional ₫50,000. Open daily 7am–5pm. Allow a full morning.
Hoa Lu (within Ninh Binh)
The ancient capital (10th century) is 12km from Ninh Binh town and 7km from Trang An — effectively within the local sight-seeing circuit rather than a day trip from elsewhere. Worth combining with Trang An in a single morning.
Ninh Binh as a connection point
Ninh Binh’s position on the Hanoi–Ho Chi Minh City train line makes it a useful overnight stop in either direction:
North: Hanoi (90 minutes by train, 2 hours by bus). Many travellers overnight in Ninh Binh before continuing to Hanoi for flights.
South: The train from Ninh Binh continues south along the coast toward Hue (approximately 7–8 hours to Hue) and Da Nang. Ninh Binh is a better lunch stop than an overnight on this route, unless you’re specifically wanting to see the province.
Ha Long Bay: Ninh Binh is not on the direct route to Ha Long Bay. From Ninh Binh, you’d return to Hanoi first (90 minutes) then connect north to Ha Long Bay (3–4 hours). Don’t attempt Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay as a combined day trip from Hanoi — it’s too much.
Kenh Ga floating village
A lesser-known boat trip 20km from Ninh Binh town. Kenh Ga is a fishing and aquaculture village on the Hoang Long River, where houses and fish farms float on the water. The boat trip passes through karst scenery similar to Tam Coc but with far fewer visitors. ₫80,000–150,000 ($3.20–6) per person for the boat trip as of 2026. Arrange through guesthouses in Tam Coc or Ninh Binh town.
Van Long Nature Reserve
A wetland reserve 20km north of Ninh Binh, known for the Delacour’s langur — one of the world’s rarest primates. The boat ride through the reserve passes through limestone karst scenery with excellent birdwatching opportunities. Entry approximately ₫20,000 ($0.80), boat approximately ₫60,000–100,000 ($2.40–4) per person as of 2026. Quieter and less commercialised than Tam Coc or Trang An.
Practical notes for day trips
Motorbike rental: The most flexible way to reach Cuc Phuong, Van Long, and Kenh Ga. Available from Tam Coc guesthouses for approximately ₫150,000–200,000 ($6–8) per day as of 2026. All routes are paved.
Guided tours: Guesthouses in Tam Coc organise day tours combining Cuc Phuong and other sites. A full-day guided tour with transport costs approximately ₫400,000–700,000 ($16–28) per person as of 2026.
Timing: Cuc Phuong requires a full morning minimum. Van Long and Kenh Ga are half-day trips. Combining Ninh Binh’s main sights (Trang An, Tam Coc, Mua Cave) with one day trip requires at least 3 days in the area.
