The Mekong Delta is one of the best cycling destinations in Vietnam. The terrain is completely flat, the roads through the fruit orchards and rice fields are quiet, and the canal scenery is excellent at bike speed — slow enough to observe the details of delta life but faster than walking.
Why cycling works in the delta
The delta has essentially no elevation. The entire region is flat agricultural land barely above sea level. Cycling here requires no fitness investment in climbing — it is about distance and endurance on the flat rather than gradient. The secondary roads between villages are low-traffic and in reasonable condition.
An Binh Island (Vinh Long) — best cycling destination
The river island accessible by ferry from Vinh Long is the single best cycling destination in the delta. The island roads wind through fruit orchards (rambutan, longan, durian), past homestay houses and small hamlets, and over narrow bridges crossing the island canals. 20–30km of cycling covers the island comprehensively.
Bicycle hire: Available from the island homestays. ₫50,000–80,000 ($2–3.20) per day.
Route: No defined circuit is necessary — the island roads are a network and getting briefly lost is part of the pleasure. Follow the sound of water for canal routes.
Can Tho area cycling
Can Tho city has cycling paths along the Ninh Kieu waterfront and roads heading out through the rice paddies. A half-day cycling tour from the city centre into the countryside east of Can Tho covers the rice farming landscape.
Bicycle hire from Can Tho hotels and guesthouses: ₫50,000–100,000 ($2–4) per day.
Ben Tre province routes
The roads between Ben Tre town and the outer delta villages pass through dense coconut palm groves and along canal banks. The cycling here is atmospheric — shade from the palms, canal views to one side, and small wooden footbridges over the waterways.
25–40km cycling routes from Ben Tre town. Bicycle hire in the town: ₫60,000–100,000 ($2.40–4) per day.
Guided cycling tours
Several tour operators run guided cycling tours of the delta islands, combining cycling with boat transport for the canal crossing sections. Recommended for first-time delta visitors who want a structured introduction.
Half-day guided tour: ₫350,000–600,000 ($14–24) per person including bicycle, guide, and boat transport.
Practical notes
Flat tyres: The delta roads have some rough sections. Bicycle repair shops (vá xe) are common in every village. Repairs: ₫15,000–30,000 ($0.60–1.20).
Heat: The delta is hot and humid. Cycling in the early morning (06:00–10:00) is significantly more comfortable than midday. Carry 1.5–2 litres of water.
Rain: The wet season (May–November) brings afternoon downpours. Morning cycling is generally rain-free; afternoon sessions get wet. The roads don’t flood dangerously but cycling in the rain on unpaved sections is slippery.
