Ho Chi Minh City Airport Transfers: Tan Son Nhat to the City (2026)

Tan Son Nhat International Airport is one of the busiest in Southeast Asia - and one of the more chaotic arrivals experiences in the region. The good news is that it sits inside the city, just 7–9 km from District 1, which means transfer times are short. The bad news is that unlicensed operators and price-inflating tactics are common. Here’s how to navigate it cleanly.

How Far Is the Airport from the City?

Tan Son Nhat is unusual for a major international airport in that it’s embedded within the city rather than on its outskirts. The straight-line distance to the backpacker area on Bui Vien Street is around 5 km. With city traffic - and HCMC traffic is some of the densest in Southeast Asia - expect 20–40 minutes for most journeys, stretching to 60–90 minutes during the worst of rush hour (roughly 7–9 am and 4–7 pm).

The airport has two main terminals:

• Terminal 1 (T1): Domestic arrivals and departures
• Terminal 2 (T2): International arrivals and departures

All arrivals exit into the same general area, but ride-hailing and taxi pickup zones differ by terminal.

Option 1: Grab (Ride-Hailing App)

Grab is the default recommendation for most travellers arriving at Tan Son Nhat. Fixed prices, no negotiation, and the driver is accountable through the app.

Cost as of 2026: approximately 100,000–160,000 VND to District 1 (Bui Vien, Ben Thanh Market area); 130,000–200,000 VND to District 3 or Binh Thanh.

How to find the zone: After exiting customs at the international terminal (T2), follow the green Grab signs to the designated pickup zone. It’s positioned past the main taxi rank - don’t stop at the first set of cars. For domestic arrivals at T1, the ride-hailing zone is on the ground level near the exit.

One thing to know: GrabBike (motorbike) is significantly cheaper at 40,000–80,000 VND, but only practical if you have minimal luggage and don’t mind the chaos of HCMC traffic on a scooter. GrabCar is the sensible choice for most arrivals.

Option 2: Official Metered Taxis

Two companies are worth using: Vinasun (white cars with a green logo and “Vinasun” prominently on the door) and Mai Linh (all-green livery). Both use accurate meters and are widely considered the only trustworthy taxi operators at Tan Son Nhat.

Cost as of 2026: approximately 100,000–180,000 VND to District 1, including any tolls. The journey is short enough that metered taxis and Grab come out similarly priced.

Where to find them: Exit the arrivals hall and follow signs for “TAXI” to the official rank on the ground level. There is a dispatcher at the front of the queue. Use them - don’t accept cars that pull up alongside you outside the queue.

Red flags: Any driver who approaches you inside the terminal, refuses to use the meter, quotes a price in US dollars, or drives a car without an official taxi logo. HCMC has a persistent problem with unmarked vehicles being presented as legitimate taxis to disoriented arrivals.

Option 3: Airport Bus (Route 109)

The cheapest transfer option is the Route 109 airport bus, which runs from Tan Son Nhat to Ben Thanh Market in District 1 - the heart of tourist HCMC.

Cost: approximately 20,000 VND (as of 2026). Pay the conductor on board.

Journey time: 30–60 minutes depending on traffic. The bus stops at several points along the route, including the Zoo, Le Van Tam Park, and the main Ben Thanh terminal.

Operating hours: roughly 5:30 am to 11:30 pm. Check the stop outside the domestic terminal (T1) on the ground floor - the stop is marked with the route number.

Luggage: Works well for one piece of carry-on or a small suitcase. Large backpacks and multiple bags become awkward on a busy bus.

There is also Route 152, which connects the airport to Cho Lon (Chinatown/District 5) - useful if you’re staying in that part of the city.

Option 4: Private Transfer (Pre-Booked)

For late-night arrivals, groups, or anyone who prefers a confirmed pickup with no queuing, a pre-booked private transfer is the cleanest option.

Cost as of 2026: approximately 200,000–350,000 VND for a private sedan to District 1; 400,000–700,000 VND for a minivan.

Kiwitaxi and Welcome Pickups both operate at Tan Son Nhat with meet-and-greet service in the arrivals hall. You’ll see your name on a board, and the price is fixed at booking. Both platforms are flight-tracked, so if your flight is delayed your driver adjusts automatically.

Best for: arrivals after midnight when buses have stopped, families with young children, business travellers, or anyone who simply doesn’t want to deal with the queue.

Option 5: Hotel Pickup

Many hotels in Districts 1, 3, and Binh Thanh offer airport transfers for guests. Given the short distance, prices typically run 150,000–350,000 VND for a car - competitive with private transfer platforms. Ask your hotel when booking, or email ahead to arrange.

Scam Awareness

Tan Son Nhat is one of the more notorious airports in Southeast Asia for taxi fraud. The most common schemes:

• “Taxi Mafia” touts: Men in unofficial uniform who guide you toward unlicensed cars. They receive a commission from drivers who overcharge. Walk past anyone who approaches you before you reach the official rank.
• Metered meter fraud: A visible meter that runs 3–5x faster than normal. Vinasun and Mai Linh are the safest bet - but even then, photograph the meter reading at the start of the journey.
• “No change” scam: Driver accepts a 500,000 VND note but claims they have no change. Carry small bills, or pay with Grab (card or app-linked wallet) to avoid cash entirely.
• Fake Grab drivers: People pretending to be your Grab driver outside the pickup zone. Always verify the plate number and driver photo in the app before getting in.

Returning to the Airport

For early morning departures, allow significant extra time - HCMC traffic before 8 am can be brutal, particularly around the airport entrance on Truong Son Street. Grab for the return is reliable, or pre-book a GetTransfer pickup the night before.

The bus (Route 109) runs from Ben Thanh from around 5:30 am, which makes it viable for mid-morning departures but tight for anything before 7 am after check-in time.
