Cat Ba Island Travel Guide 2026: Rock Climbing, Kayaking and Lan Ha Bay
Cat Ba Island travel guide — the rock climbing centre of SE Asia, Lan Ha Bay kayaking, national park, beaches and the best base for Ha Long Bay.
Guides for Cat Ba Island
Cat Ba is the largest island in the Ha Long Bay archipelago at 285km², though Lan Ha Bay (its southern waters) is classified separately from Ha Long Bay. The island has a proper small town (Cat Ba Town), a national park covering 17,000 hectares, and has developed into Southeast Asia’s primary rock climbing destination.
It is also, practically, the best base for experiencing the Ha Long Bay area. Cat Ba Town has better accommodation and food than Ha Long City, the boat access to Lan Ha Bay is direct, and the island has its own activities that justify a 3–4 night stay independently of the bay scenery.
Quick facts
- Getting there: Bus from Hanoi to Haiphong (2.5 hours), then ferry to Cat Ba (45 min to 1.5 hours depending on route). Or direct Hanoi–Cat Ba bus-ferry combos.
- Town: Cat Ba Town has everything a traveller needs — multiple guesthouses, restaurants, tour desks, motorbike rental, dive and kayak operators.
- National park: Cat Ba National Park covers the northern and central island. Admission ₫150,000. Trekking routes available.
- Best time: April–October for swimming and outdoor activities. November–March: cool, some rain, fewer visitors. Rock climbing is possible year-round.
The rock climbing scene
Cat Ba is the rock climbing capital of Southeast Asia. The karst pillars that rise from Lan Ha Bay provide climbing routes for all levels — from beginner-friendly bolted sport routes to multi-pitch trad and deep water soloing (DWS).
Deep Water Soloing: The signature Cat Ba experience. Routes are climbed above the sea, with the ocean as the landing zone when you fall or reach the top. The combination of 20–30m sea cliffs, warm water, and the bay scenery makes this a genuinely extraordinary climbing experience. No ropes required; no experience needed for the easier routes.
Asia Outdoors is the main international-standard operator. Day trips from Cat Ba Town, equipment provided, instructors qualified to international standards. Sessions from ₫800,000–1,500,000 ($32–60) depending on format.
Lan Ha Bay kayaking
Lan Ha Bay, south of Cat Ba, has the same limestone karst scenery as Ha Long Bay with significantly fewer cruise boats and cleaner water. The three cave destinations (Dark Cave, Bright Cave, Ba Ham Lake) are the primary kayaking targets. See the kayaking guide.
Cat Ba National Park
The park covers primary tropical forest with good biodiversity. The Cat Ba langur (grey-headed langur) is critically endangered — estimated fewer than 60 individuals remaining, all on Cat Ba Island. The park protects the last wild population. Walking trails from the park gate reach viewpoints over the island.
Park admission: ₫150,000. The main trail (7km one way to Hospital Cave) is moderately demanding. Guides available from Cat Ba Town.
Honest notes
Cat Ba Town is primarily a tourist town and has developed rapidly since 2010. The seafront strip is touristy with inflated prices. The better restaurants and guesthouses are on the streets behind the main waterfront. The national park and Lan Ha Bay are the genuine draws — Cat Ba Town is a functional base, not a destination in itself.
