Cat Ba Island is well positioned for day trips into the surrounding bay system and to Haiphong for onward travel. The most rewarding day excursions stay on the water.
Lan Ha Bay — the best day out from Cat Ba
Lan Ha Bay is the water directly south and east of Cat Ba Island. It shares the same karst geology as Ha Long Bay but has significantly less cruise boat traffic and cleaner water. Most kayaking and climbing trips from Cat Ba operate in Lan Ha Bay rather than Ha Long Bay proper.
A full-day boat trip into Lan Ha Bay costs ₫700,000–1,200,000 ($28–48) per person and typically includes kayaking, cave visits (Dark Cave or Bright Cave), snorkelling, and lunch on the boat. Asia Outdoors and operators in Cat Ba Town run these daily.
What Lan Ha Bay offers that Ha Long Bay doesn’t: Quiet. The floating fishing villages here are still functioning communities rather than tourist attractions. The caves are visited in smaller groups.
Ha Long Bay proper — day access from Cat Ba
Cat Ba is positioned at the eastern edge of the Ha Long Bay UNESCO zone. Day boat trips into the main Ha Long Bay karst area — including Thien Cung Cave and the central island formations — operate from Cat Ba. Expect 6–8 hours on the water.
Prices: ₫600,000–1,000,000 ($24–40) per person for organised group day trips from Cat Ba Town.
The honest assessment: for travellers already on Cat Ba, Lan Ha Bay offers a better day than the central Ha Long Bay zone. The Ha Long Bay proper trips make more sense if you haven’t seen the karst scenery at all.
Floating fishing villages
Several active fishing villages operate on the bay — families living on houseboats, net farming, and fishing. Day boat trips from Cat Ba Town pass through or stop at these villages.
Vung Vieng Village: The largest floating village accessible from Cat Ba, with approximately 40 households. Boat trips stop here for 30–45 minutes. Access by rowboat through the village. ₫150,000 ($6) entry fee included in most day trip prices.
Ba Hang Village: Smaller and quieter. Accessible on full-day Lan Ha Bay trips.
The floating village experience is genuine — these are real communities, not reconstructions — but visits are brief and the interaction is limited.
Haiphong — transport hub, not a destination
Haiphong is Vietnam’s third city and the transport hub connecting Cat Ba to Hanoi and the rest of the country. The ferry from Cat Ba Town to Haiphong runs multiple times daily (1.5 hours, ₫120,000 / $4.80). From Haiphong there are buses and trains to Hanoi (2–3 hours).
Haiphong has a French colonial old quarter with some well-preserved architecture, a decent local food scene (banh mi dac biet is a Haiphong speciality), and a fishing harbour. It is worth a half-day if you’re transiting — not worth a dedicated trip from Cat Ba.
Cai Beo Archaeological Site
A prehistoric stilt-house settlement site on the edge of Lan Ha Bay, dating to approximately 4,000 BCE. Archaeological evidence of Vietnam’s earliest coastal communities. Accessible by boat from Cat Ba Town. Often included on organised Lan Ha Bay tours. Limited interpretation on-site.
Practical notes
Boat trip booking: Through Asia Outdoors, Cat Ba Town operators, or your accommodation. Prices are negotiable for group bookings. Peak season (October–November) — book the day before.
Independent boat hire: Possible but requires Vietnamese or an intermediary to negotiate with boat owners at Cat Ba pier. ₫400,000–700,000 ($16–28) per hour for a small boat.
Weather: Ha Long Bay weather is unpredictable. Tours cancel in strong wind or heavy rain. Flexible departure dates reduce frustration.
