Cat Ba Island is the rock climbing capital of Southeast Asia. The limestone karst pillars that rise from Lan Ha Bay provide hundreds of routes — sport, trad, and deep water soloing — in one of the most beautiful climbing environments anywhere.
Deep Water Soloing (DWS)
The signature Cat Ba experience. DWS involves climbing routes above the sea without ropes — when you fall (at any height) or choose to jump, the sea is the landing zone. The routes are climbed with hands only, no harness, no gear.
Why Cat Ba is one of the world’s best DWS venues:
- Warm water year-round (minimum 20°C)
- Vertical and overhanging karst limestone with excellent texture
- Routes from 10m beginner-friendly to 35m+ expert
- The bay scenery — climbing on a vertical cliff face with the bay extending below — is extraordinary
- Asia Outdoors has developed and bolted the routes to international safety standards
What to expect: Asia Outdoors provides a boat transfer to the climbing area, instruction for beginners, safety briefing, and guide supervision throughout. You don’t need to know how to rock climb — the beginner routes are genuinely accessible for anyone fit enough to pull themselves up. You do need to be comfortable jumping into the sea from increasing heights.
DWS half-day trip: ₫800,000–1,000,000 ($32–40) per person. Full day: ₫1,200,000–1,500,000 ($48–60).
Sport climbing
Bolted sport climbing routes on the karst walls around Lan Ha Bay, on several designated crags. Routes from 5a to 8a+ (French grading). The sport climbing operates on ropes — different setup from DWS, appropriate for technical climbing development.
Most routes are single pitch (15–25m). Multi-pitch options exist for more experienced climbers.
Multi-pitch and trad climbing
Asia Outdoors has developed several multi-pitch routes on the taller formations. These require previous multi-pitch experience. Enquire directly about current access and conditions.
Who can climb
Complete beginners: DWS on beginner routes is genuinely accessible. You don’t need climbing experience — just the willingness to fall into the sea. The beginner routes have good holds and relatively easy movement.
Intermediate climbers: Both DWS and sport climbing have options for people with a few months to a year of climbing experience. The intermediate DWS routes are physically demanding and technically interesting.
Experienced climbers: Cat Ba has routes that challenge experienced sport and trad climbers. Deep water soloing at the expert end (sustained overhangs above 20m of deep water) is a serious physical challenge.
Asia Outdoors
The primary and most established climbing operator on Cat Ba. Founded by an international team, the operation has been running for 15+ years and has a strong safety record. All guides are internationally certified.
Booking: Through their website (asiaoutdoors.com.vn) or in person at their Cat Ba Town shop. Book at least one day ahead in peak season (October–November).
Other operators: Several other Cat Ba operators offer climbing. The quality varies — Asia Outdoors is the established standard.
Equipment
Asia Outdoors provides all equipment. Wear swimwear or quick-dry shorts (you will get wet). Shoes with grip are provided for DWS routes.
