Getting to Phong Nha 2026: From Hanoi, Hue and Da Nang

Phong Nha is 50km west of Dong Hoi, the regional capital of Quang Binh province. All transport routes pass through Dong Hoi.

Fly to Dong Hoi

The fastest option. Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet operate flights from Hanoi (1 hour) and HCMC (1.5 hours) to Dong Hoi Airport. From Dong Hoi airport to Phong Nha village: ₫200,000–350,000 ($8–14) by taxi or arranged transfer (50km, 1 hour).

When to fly: From Hanoi — flying saves a full day compared to the train or bus. From the south, the flight is the practical choice unless you’re doing the overland coastal route.

Bus from Hue (most common route)

Journey time: 3–4 hours to Dong Hoi, then 50km to Phong Nha.

Several transport options run the Hue–Phong Nha route:

Direct tourist bus: Several operators (Jungle Boss, Phong Nha Discovery) run direct buses from Hue to Phong Nha village. No change required. Journey: 5–6 hours. Price: ₫200,000–350,000 ($8–14). Book through your guesthouse or directly.

Public bus to Dong Hoi then local transport: Buses from Hue to Dong Hoi run regularly from the An Cuu bus station. ₫80,000–130,000 ($3.20–5.20). From Dong Hoi, take a local bus or taxi to Phong Nha (50km, ₫150,000–250,000 / $6–10 by taxi).

Bus or train from Da Nang

Train: Dong Hoi is on the North-South railway (Reunification Express). Several trains daily from Da Nang to Dong Hoi (2.5–3 hours). From Dong Hoi station, taxi to Phong Nha. Train: ₫80,000–200,000 ($3.20–8) depending on class.

Bus: Tourist buses run Da Nang → Phong Nha direct. Approximately 5 hours. ₫200,000–350,000 ($8–14).

From Hanoi

Train to Dong Hoi: Several Reunification Express trains run the route (9–10 hours overnight). Soft sleeper berths available. From Dong Hoi, taxi to Phong Nha. Train: ₫250,000–600,000 ($10–24) depending on class.

Bus: Long sleeper bus services run Hanoi to Phong Nha direct (12–14 hours overnight). ₫250,000–380,000 ($10–15).

Leaving Phong Nha onward

The same transport options in reverse. If continuing south (Da Nang, Hoi An), note that many travellers combine Phong Nha with the Hue–Hoi An coastal route and do the Ho Chi Minh Road section by motorbike.
