Things to do here
The top-rated tours and activities here — all with instant confirmation and free cancellation on most bookings.
Phong Nha’s remote location limits day trip options, but the Ho Chi Minh Road motorbike route and the DMZ sites to the north are genuinely worthwhile for travellers with extra time.
Ho Chi Minh Road (National Highway 15)
The old Ho Chi Minh Trail — the logistics network that supplied North Vietnamese forces during the American War — runs through the mountains west of Phong Nha. The modern Ho Chi Minh Road follows a similar route and passes through extraordinary karst and jungle scenery.
Motorbike riders heading north toward Hue or south toward Hoi An can take the western route via the Ho Chi Minh Road rather than the coastal Highway 1. The mountain scenery is significantly better. The road is paved and in good condition.
Phong Nha → Hue via Ho Chi Minh Road: Approximately 250km. One long day of riding. Passes through the karst mountains, jungle sections, and several significant war sites.
DMZ Sites (60–80km north)
The former Demilitarised Zone sites — Khe Sanh combat base, Vinh Moc tunnels, the Ben Hai river border — lie 60–80km north of Phong Nha, closer to Dong Ha town. Accessible by motorbike in a long day.
Vinh Moc Tunnels: Where 1,200 civilians lived underground during sustained American bombing. More atmospheric and accessible than Cu Chi tunnels near HCMC.
Khe Sanh Combat Base: Site of a 77-day siege in 1968. A small museum with combat vehicles on the former base.
By motorbike from Phong Nha: leave early, reach Vinh Moc by 10:00, Khe Sanh by 13:00, return by 18:00. Long but feasible.
Dong Hoi Coast
Dong Hoi, 50km east (the regional transport hub), has a beach and basic coastal infrastructure. Nhat Le Beach in Dong Hoi is an easy half-day excursion by motorbike or local bus. The beach is clean and largely undeveloped.
Nhat Le Beach: Quiet Vietnamese beach without tourist infrastructure. Good for a swim and lunch at a local seafood restaurant. 50km from Phong Nha.
Bong Lai Valley
12km north of Phong Nha, Bong Lai is a smaller valley where several of the community-based cave tour operators run half-day kayaking and cave swimming trips. A good secondary activity to add to a Phong Nha stay. ₫200,000–400,000 ($8–16) per person.
Getting around for day trips
Motorbike hire: ₫150,000–200,000 ($6–8) per day from guesthouses. The best way to access the DMZ sites and Ho Chi Minh Road independently.
Organised tours: Guesthouses in Phong Nha organise DMZ day tours by minibus for ₫300,000–500,000 ($12–20) per person. More comfortable for non-riders.
