Things to do here

The top-rated tours and activities here — all with instant confirmation and free cancellation on most bookings.

Phong Nha’s activities are primarily cave-focused. The valley setting also offers cycling, swimming, and jungle trekking. Plan at least 2 days to cover the main caves.

Paradise Cave (Thien Duong Cave)

The best cave visit in the Phong Nha area for standard tourists. 31km long (only 1.5km accessible to visitors), Paradise Cave has exceptional stalactite and stalagmite formations on a scale that is visually overwhelming.

The walk inside follows a wooden boardwalk through the lit section. The formations — white and orange calcite columns, flowstone floors, delicate helictites — are among the most spectacular accessible cave interiors in Southeast Asia.

Entry: ₫350,000 ($14) including electric buggy to the cave entrance. 30km from the village — hire a motorbike or join an organised group from the guesthouse. Allow 2–3 hours.

Dark Cave (Hang Toi) Adventure

A different cave experience — adventure-focused rather than sightseeing. Access involves a zipline entry over the Son river, then swimming through the cave to a mud pool section (bathing in mineral-rich cave mud is the main activity). Kayaking back along the river.

Entry: ₫450,000 ($18) including all equipment and activities. Located on the Son river road, accessible by bicycle or motorbike from the village.

Phong Nha Cave and Son River boat trip

The original tourist cave in the park. Boats leave from the boat landing near the village, travel 3km up the Son river, and enter the cave at river level. The boat tour goes approximately 1.5km inside. On exit, the walk-through section shows cave formations.

Pricing: ₫250,000 per boat (up to 14 people) plus ₫150,000 park entry per person. The boat trip on the Son river — with the karst mountains and forested banks — is as worthwhile as the cave itself.

Son Doong Cave (expedition)

The world’s largest cave. Accessible only via a 4-day guided expedition with Oxalis Adventure Tours. Maximum 1,000 visitors per year. Price: approximately $3,000 USD per person, all inclusive. The permit window opens annually — book 12+ months in advance.

The expedition involves trekking through jungle, rappelling down into the cave entrance, camping inside the cave, and swimming. Physical fitness is required. Son Doong is widely considered one of the world’s most extraordinary places.

En Cave and Tu Lan Cave: Oxalis also offers shorter expeditions (1–3 days) to other spectacular national park caves at lower prices ($150–$700 USD). These are the best alternatives for those who can’t access Son Doong.

Cycling the valley

The flat road along the Son river from Phong Nha village is excellent for cycling — minimal traffic, karst mountain scenery, and the ability to stop at Dark Cave or the boat landing at your pace.

Bicycle hire: ₫50,000–80,000 ($2–3.20) per day from guesthouses. The roads to Paradise Cave (30km) require a motorbike or the park shuttle — too far for casual cycling.

Botanic Garden and Trekking

The Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park botanic garden is a short drive from the village. Jungle trekking routes in the park are operated by Oxalis and other local guides. Half-day jungle treks to smaller cave entrances: ₫200,000–400,000 ($8–16) per person.

Swimming at the Son River

The river is swimmable at several points near the village. Clean, clear water in a karst valley — one of the more pleasant swimming spots in central Vietnam. Best in the morning.
