Where to Stay in Mai Chau 2026: Homestays vs Guesthouses vs Resorts
Mai Chau accommodation divides into three distinct types: White Thai stilt-house homestays, budget guesthouses in the town area, and mid-range to upscale resorts in the valley.
White Thai stilt-house homestays (best experience)
Staying in a stilt house is the primary reason most visitors come to Mai Chau. Ban Lac and Pom Coong villages have the highest concentration of homestay options.
What to expect: Communal sleeping in a large room on the upper floor of a traditional stilt house — mattresses laid out on bamboo mats. Some homestays have partitioned private rooms. Dinner is typically included (evening meal of White Thai food — sticky rice, grilled chicken, local vegetables) plus breakfast. Most families don’t speak much English; communication is basic but sufficient.
Prices: ₫200,000–350,000 ($8–14) per person per night including dinner and breakfast. Single travellers typically share the room with other guests. Families or groups can sometimes arrange private rooms for a supplement.
Honest note: Ban Lac homestays directly on the main path have become more commercial. The homestays slightly away from the tourist main drag — particularly in Pom Coong — offer a more genuine experience.
Guesthouses and small hotels (budget private rooms)
If you prefer a proper bed and private room, small guesthouses operate around the main Mai Chau town area (not in the stilt villages). Facilities are basic: private room, simple bathroom, no frills.
Prices: ₫300,000–600,000 ($12–24) per night. These options provide less cultural immersion but are quieter at night than the homestay communal rooms.
Valley resorts (mid-range and above)
Several resort properties have been built on the valley floor — purpose-built accommodation targeting Vietnamese city weekenders and international travellers who want comfort in a scenic location.
Mai Chau Ecolodge: The best-known upscale option. Bungalows in a garden setting with rice paddy views. Pool, restaurant, activities programme. ₫2,500,000–5,000,000 ($100–200).
Mai Chau Lodge: Resort-style property with mountain views. ₫1,500,000–3,000,000 ($60–120).
Budget resort options: Several smaller resorts in the ₫700,000–1,500,000 ($28–60) range. Usually a concrete building with air-con rooms and more facilities than a guesthouse.
What to choose
First-time visitor who wants the Mai Chau experience: Homestay in Ban Lac or Pom Coong. The cultural immersion and evening meal are the point of the trip.
Couple or family wanting private space with comfort: Valley resort. The Ecolodge is genuinely good.
Budget traveller prioritising sleep quality: Guesthouse with private room rather than communal homestay.
Booking
Most homestays don’t have online booking. Arriving without a reservation is generally fine outside Vietnamese public holidays (Tet, April 30th, September 2nd). During Tet, Mai Chau is very crowded with domestic visitors — book ahead.
Resorts and hotels are bookable through standard platforms. Direct booking often gets a better rate for resorts.
