Best Hotels in Mai Chau 2026: Valley Resorts and Guesthouses

Mai Chau’s hotel options beyond the stilt-house homestays cover everything from boutique eco-lodges to simple guesthouses. The best properties use the valley scenery as their main asset. Accommodation divides into three distinct types: White Thai stilt-house homestays, budget guesthouses in the town area, and mid-range to upscale resorts in the valley.

Mai Chau Ecolodge: The standout property in the valley. Wooden bungalows on stilts in a garden setting with direct views of the rice paddies. Good pool, solid restaurant (Vietnamese and Western), and an activities desk that organises cycling and trekking. It is a resort rather than a cultural immersion experience. ₫2,500,000–5,000,000 ($100–200).

Mai Chau Lodge: Well-maintained resort with bungalow-style rooms on the valley floor. Mountain views, pool, restaurant. More formal than the Ecolodge but similarly comfortable. ₫2,000,000–4,000,000 ($80–160).

Mid-range (₫700,000–2,000,000 / $28–80)

Mai Chau Nature Lodge: Simpler bungalow accommodation with a good central location for cycling. Air-con, hot water, and a basic restaurant. Good value in the mid-range. ₫800,000–1,500,000 ($32–60).

Green Organic Homestay: The more upscale end of the homestay spectrum - private rooms in a stilt house setting rather than communal dormitory layout. White Thai cultural elements preserved but with better sleeping conditions. ₫600,000–1,000,000 ($24–40).

Mai Chau Town guesthouses: Several unnamed and locally-run guesthouses operate in the town near the bus stop. Basic clean rooms, private bathrooms. No communal meals. ₫300,000–600,000 ($12–24).

Budget homestays in Ban Lac: The most affordable accommodation in Mai Chau. Communal sleeping in a large room on the upper floor of a traditional stilt house - mattresses laid out on bamboo mats. Some homestays have partitioned private rooms. Dinner and breakfast of White Thai food included. ₫200,000–350,000 ($8–14) per person including meals.

White Thai stilt-house homestays

Staying in a stilt house is the primary reason most visitors come to Mai Chau. Ban Lac and Pom Coong villages have the highest concentration of homestay options.

What to expect: Communal sleeping in a large room on the upper floor of a traditional stilt house. Dinner is typically included (evening meal of White Thai food - sticky rice, grilled chicken, local vegetables) plus breakfast. Most families don’t speak much English; communication is basic but sufficient. Single travellers typically share the room with other guests.

Honest note: Ban Lac homestays directly on the main path have become more commercial. The homestays slightly away from the tourist main drag - particularly in Pom Coong - offer a more genuine experience with fewer souvenir vendors.

Most homestays don’t have online booking. Arriving without a reservation is generally fine outside Vietnamese public holidays. During Tet, Mai Chau is very crowded with domestic visitors - book ahead.

What matters in Mai Chau accommodation

Valley views vs road-side rooms: The scenic appeal of Mai Chau is its rice paddy valley - accommodation facing the fields is significantly better than accommodation facing the road.

Meal inclusion: Resorts charge separately for food. Homestays include dinner and breakfast. For budget travellers the homestay meal inclusion changes the value calculation considerably.

Cycling access: Everywhere in the valley is within easy cycling range. Location matters less than at urban destinations.

Seasonal considerations

The rice paddies are greenest from May to September. October–November is harvest season with golden paddies. December–February can be cold, particularly at night - bring warm layers. The valley receives less rain than the coast, so outdoor activities are viable year-round.

Getting to Mai Chau

From Hanoi: 140km southwest, approximately 3.5–4 hours by bus or hired car. Buses from Hanoi’s My Dinh station run to Mai Chau for approximately ₫100,000–150,000 ($4–6) as of 2026. The last 30km descend into the valley with good views of the rice paddies below.

Day trip or overnight: Mai Chau is possible as a day trip from Hanoi but an overnight stay is far better - the evening atmosphere in the valley (traditional performances, quiet rice paddy walks, communal homestay dinners) is the best part of the experience.

Activities in Mai Chau

Cycling: Flat roads through the rice paddies connecting White Thai villages. Bicycles are available from all accommodation for approximately ₫50,000–100,000 ($2–4) per day as of 2026.

Trekking: Half-day and full-day guided treks to minority villages in the surrounding hills. From approximately ₫200,000–400,000 ($8–16) per person with a guide as of 2026.

Traditional performances: Several homestays in Ban Lac organise evening Thai dance and music performances. Often included in the homestay price.
