Cycling is the best way to experience the Mai Chau valley. The flat terrain, quiet farm roads, and rice paddy scenery make it accessible to all fitness levels. You don’t need to be an experienced cyclist to enjoy Mai Chau by bike.
Why cycling works in Mai Chau
The valley floor is almost completely flat. The distances between villages are 2–8km. Farm roads and paths link the villages through the paddy fields without needing to use the main highway. There is minimal motorised traffic on the village tracks. The scenery — green or gold rice paddies, limestone karst hills as backdrop, stilt houses at intervals — is consistently good.
Bike rental
Available from almost every homestay, guesthouse, and small shop in Ban Lac and the town area. Prices: ₫50,000–100,000 ($2–4) per day for a basic bicycle. Mountain bikes and hybrid bikes are available from the larger homestays and some guesthouses — worth the extra ₫20,000–30,000 for better gearing and comfort.
Bike condition varies. Check brakes and tyres before leaving. Ask for a pump if the tyres are soft.
Main cycling routes
Ban Lac to Pom Coong loop (8km, 2–3 hours): The most popular route. Ban Lac → farm track east through paddy fields → Pom Coong village → return via the slightly different northern track. Entirely flat. Good for half a morning.
Valley east extension (15–20km, 4–5 hours): Continue east from Pom Coong along the valley floor. The paddy fields extend for several kilometres and the villages get smaller and less visited. Return the same way or make a loop via the highway. Some gentle rises at the valley edges.
Thung Khe Pass approach (10km one-way, returns by road): From Ban Lac northwest to the base of the pass road. The pass road itself climbs steeply (not suitable for basic bikes), but the approach through the valley is excellent. Return via the highway.
Pu Luong direction (one-way, requires transport return): The road east toward Pu Luong Nature Reserve passes through attractive valleys. Cycling the first 15–20km, then arranging a motorbike back, gives a full day of varied scenery. Requires pre-arrangement.
Best conditions for cycling
Morning (06:00–10:00): Best light on the paddies, coolest temperature, quietest roads. Worth getting up early.
October–November: Harvest season. Farmers work the fields by hand, water buffalo visible, golden paddies before cutting. The visual peak of the cycling year.
March–May: Second crop growing season. Green paddies. Warm but not yet hot.
Rain: The valley paths become muddy after rain and the paddy field tracks can be slippery. Not dangerous — just messy. Pack dry-bag for camera.
Guided cycling
Guided cycling tours are available from Ban Lac homestays. The guide leads through the quieter village tracks and introduces stops at local workshops and households. ₫150,000–300,000 ($6–12) per person for a half-day guided route. Useful for first-time visitors who want orientation; not necessary for self-guided riders with a downloaded map.
