Ha Giang Province in Vietnam’s far north is the country’s most dramatic landscape and, for many travellers, its most memorable experience. The Ha Giang Loop — a roughly 350-kilometre circuit through the Dong Van Karst Plateau UNESCO Geopark — winds through limestone pinnacle mountains, deep river gorges, H’Mong and Dao minority villages, and the stomach-dropping hairpin bends of Ma Pi Leng Pass. It is not an easy destination to reach (around 6 hours from Hanoi by road), and the road itself demands respect, but the combination of scenery, cultural depth, and remoteness puts it in a category of its own.

Most tours run 3 to 5 days. The two main formats are: Easy Rider (you ride pillion on the back of a local guide’s motorbike) and self-drive (you rent your own semi-automatic or automatic bike and the guide drives ahead or alongside). Both have merits; the right choice depends on your riding experience.

We have mapped 8 top-rated Ha Giang tours by duration and format.

Prices are approximate in USD as of 2026. Note: from June 2026, a mandatory foreigner permit of approximately $10 per person is required to ride the Ha Giang Loop — most tour operators handle this on your behalf.

For Independent Riders: Self-Drive Tours

The 3-Day Self-Driving Motorbike Loop from Hanoi is designed for travellers who want to ride their own bike but prefer the security of a support structure. The tour provides a semi-automatic motorbike, a guide who either rides ahead or alongside (not just waiting at checkpoints), and accommodation at guesthouses along the route. Day one covers Hanoi to Ha Giang Town (often by night bus to save a day). Day two is the scenic core: Dong Van, Ma Pi Leng Pass, the Nho Que River gorge. Day three completes the loop back via Yen Minh. From approximately $85/person including bike rental and accommodation.

This format suits travellers who have previous motorbike experience (at minimum, comfortable with semi-automatic bikes on mountain roads) and want the freedom of their own pace. Ha Giang roads are challenging — steep gradients, sharp corners, unpredictable road conditions — so honest self-assessment before booking is essential.

Duration: 3 days | Price: from $85/person | Includes: Motorbike rental, accommodation, guide, foreigner permit

For First-Timers: Easy Rider Tours

The 2/3-Day Ha Giang Loop with Easy Rider from Hanoi puts you on the back of an experienced local guide’s motorbike for the entire loop. You contribute nothing to the navigation or riding — your job is to hold on, look around, and ask questions. The Easy Rider format originated in Da Lat in the 1990s and has been the standard way for non-riders to experience Vietnam’s backcountry roads ever since. Ha Giang’s guides are typically from ethnic minority communities and can explain local customs, point out plants, and arrange village stops that wouldn’t appear on a standard itinerary. From approximately $90/person for the 3-day version.

The 2-Day 2-Night Loop from Hanoi is a compact alternative for travellers with only 3 days total (including travel from Hanoi). It covers the key sections — Quan Ba Heaven’s Gate, Yen Minh, Dong Van, and Ma Pi Leng — without the full circuit. Accommodation in local guesthouses with basic but clean facilities. From approximately $95/person.

Duration: 2–3 days | Price: from $90–95/person | Includes: Easy Rider guide, accommodation, most meals, foreigner permit

For Those Wanting More Comfort: Luxury Loop Tours

The 3-Day Luxury Loop with Easy Rider covers the same core loop but upgrades the accommodation, includes a scenic boat ride on the Nho Que River, and adds waterfall jumping at Du Gia Waterfall as an optional activity. Meals are at better restaurants rather than basic roadside stops, and the group size is capped to ensure a more personal experience. From approximately $180/person. This tour suits travellers who want the Ha Giang experience but find the standard guesthouse-and-bun-pho format a bit austere.

Duration: 3 days | Price: from $180/person | Includes: Premium accommodation, Nho Que River boat ride, meals, Easy Rider guide, foreigner permit

For Thorough Explorers: 4- and 5-Day Tours

The 4-Day Easy Rider Loop from Hanoi adds time that most 3-day tours sacrifice. The extra day allows slower riding through Dong Van’s Old Quarter — a rare H’Mong market town that looks little changed from the French colonial era — and a more relaxed approach to Sunday ethnic markets at Dong Van or Meo Vac (schedule-dependent). The loop covers approximately 350 km total. From approximately $130/person including accommodation, guide, and foreigner permit.

The 5-Day Ha Giang Loop Tour with Motorbike is the deepest available option, starting from Lung Tam village and incorporating visits to the Lung Tam weaving village (where Lô Lô women weave traditional textiles on backstrap looms) and the H’Mong King’s House at Dong Van — a well-preserved Qing Dynasty-style mansion built in 1903 for the local chieftain. Pacing is slower and the route includes off-loop detours into valleys that the standard circuit misses. From approximately $195/person.

Duration: 4–5 days | Price: from $130–195/person | Includes: Full circuit plus cultural extensions, all accommodation, meals, guide

For Time-Limited Travellers: 2-Day Loop from Ha Giang Town

If you are already in Ha Giang Town and want the core loop without returning to Hanoi, the 2-Day 1-Night Loop from Ha Giang Town is the most efficient option. Day one rides from Ha Giang Town to Dong Van via Quan Ba and Yen Minh — the northern panoramic sections. Day two covers Ma Pi Leng Pass (the undisputed visual centrepiece of the loop) and returns via Meo Vac. From approximately $75/person; does not include transport from Hanoi to Ha Giang.

Duration: 2 days | Price: from $75/person | Includes: Motorbike or Easy Rider option, accommodation in Dong Van, guide

Practical Notes for Ha Giang Tours

Getting to Ha Giang: Most tours include overnight bus transfer from Hanoi (approximately 6 hours by sleeper bus). The bus departs Hanoi in the evening and arrives in Ha Giang Town in the early morning, maximising riding time. A few tour packages fly Hanoi–Ha Giang on Vietnam Airlines regional routes.

Foreigner permit: Since June 3rd, 2026, a mandatory permit costing approximately $10 per person is required for foreign nationals riding the Ha Giang Loop. All GYG-listed tours handle this on your behalf; do not attempt the loop without it as checkpoints are staffed.

Riding ability: For self-drive tours, you should be comfortable on a semi-automatic (no clutch) or manual motorbike in hilly terrain before arrival. Practise in Hanoi or Sapa first if you have any doubt. For Easy Rider tours, no experience is needed.

Best time to visit: October and November bring golden rice terraces at harvest time — the most photogenic period. March and April see the buckwheat flowers bloom across Dong Van Plateau (pink-white flowers covering the limestone karsts). Avoid the rainy season (June–August) when roads can become dangerously slippery.

Sunday markets: Dong Van and Meo Vac markets on Sundays draw H’Mong, Lô Lô, Dao, and Tay communities from surrounding villages. If your tour dates allow, arriving in Dong Van on a Saturday night is worth arranging.
