Vietnam Railways launches pilot services on a dedicated heritage tourist train connecting Hue and Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park on 28 August 2026, with regular commercial departures following from 1 September.
The Route
The train covers 190 km through central Vietnam via Dong Ha, My Trach, Dong Hoi, and Tho Loc — a journey of approximately 4.5 hours. That is somewhat slower than the 2.5–3 hour drive on National Route 9, but the train passes through a distinctly different landscape of river valleys, coastal plains, and the low-lying hills framing the Annamite Range.
What Sets This Train Apart
The rolling stock is specifically fitted for tourism rather than commuter use:
- 360-degree rotating seats allow passengers to turn toward the view on either side of the carriage
- 8 carriages total, with cultural display areas highlighting the history of central Vietnam and the ancient Cham Kingdom
- On-board catering featuring dishes specific to central Vietnamese cuisine — Hue bún bò, bánh bèo, and Dong Hoi-style seafood prepared in the dining carriage
Why These Two Destinations
Hue is Vietnam’s former imperial capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The citadel, the Thien Mu Pagoda, and the imperial tombs along the Perfume River remain among the most-visited sites in the country.
Phong Nha-Ke Bang is Vietnam’s premier cave destination — and arguably the most significant cave system in the world. Son Doong, the largest known cave on the planet, is here. So are Tu Lan, Hang Tien, and Hang Va, alongside dozens of systems still being fully explored. The existing road connection from Hue is limited in tourist transport options, which makes the train a genuine opening-up of the corridor for independent travellers.
Booking and Practical Information
Tickets are sold through Vietnam Railways’ booking platform and licensed tour operators. Both Hue and Dong Hoi (the alighting station nearest Phong Nha) have well-established taxi and minibus transfer networks for the final leg to the national park.
Given the pilot launch and the attention this route is likely to draw, we recommend booking ahead for any September travel to central Vietnam.
