Vung Tau is one of the few places in southern Vietnam with a genuinely developed hostel scene outside of Ho Chi Minh City. It’s a 2-hour ferry or bus ride from HCMC, making it the go-to beach escape for expats, weekending Saigonese, and backpackers who want a beach without the full journey to Da Nang or Mui Ne. The hostel infrastructure reflects that demand.
The Back Beach hostel strip
Back Beach (Bai Sau) is where the hostels concentrate. It’s the longer, wider of Vung Tau’s two main beaches — more space, more accommodation options, more of the backpacker and younger expat crowd. The hostels here are a mix of purpose-built properties and converted guesthouses with dorms added.
Dorm rates: ₫130,000–220,000 per night ($5–9). At the lower end you get a standard bunk in a 6–10 bed dorm, air conditioning, shared bathrooms. At the higher end, smaller dorms (4–6 beds), often better maintained facilities, and sometimes a rooftop or pool access.
A few properties that consistently come up in backpacker reviews: Booze and Cruise Hostel (social, rooftop bar, right on the Back Beach strip), Long Hai Hostel (quieter, slightly back from the beach, better for sleep), and several newer properties that have opened along Thuy Van Street and the cross streets running down to the beach. Check Hostelworld and Booking.com for current availability and recent reviews — the scene here is active enough that new properties open regularly.
The party vs quiet trade-off
Back Beach at weekends is lively. Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, the beach and the streets behind it fill with HCMC visitors — the weekend surge is real and it affects every hostel on the strip. Social hostels lean into this: rooftop bars, beer promotions, organised beach sessions. If that’s what you’re after, weekends at a Back Beach social hostel deliver it.
If you want Vung Tau’s beach without the noise, come Monday to Thursday. The beach is genuinely quieter mid-week, hostel common areas are less crowded, and some hostels offer lower weekday rates.
Front Beach vs Back Beach
Front Beach (Bai Truoc) is calmer and more sedate — the city’s main promenade faces a bay with gentler water, and the accommodation here leans toward hotels and mid-range properties rather than hostels. It’s a 10–15 minute walk or short Grab ride from Back Beach. If you’re in a hostel on Back Beach but want a quieter evening, Front Beach’s promenade is a 20-minute walk.
For comfort and privacy rather than dorms, see our Vung Tau hotels guide which covers the full range of options across both beaches.
Booking notes
The HCMC weekend effect on accommodation is significant. Back Beach hostels on Friday and Saturday nights during Vietnamese public holidays (April 30, September 2, Tết) are frequently sold out. Book at least a week ahead for holiday weekends; mid-week arrivals can usually find same-day availability outside peak periods.
Prices during Tết (Lunar New Year) and major holidays rise across all accommodation types in Vung Tau. Budget ₫50,000–80,000 more per night than standard rates.
Getting there
The Superdong or Greenlines ferry from Bach Dang pier in HCMC is the most enjoyable option (2 hours, ₫200,000–280,000 one way). Buses from Mien Dong station take 2–2.5 hours and cost ₫80,000–120,000 depending on operator. Grab cars are available for the whole journey (expensive) or from the bus/ferry terminal to your hostel.
Practical notes
- Back Beach water is swimmable but not particularly clear — it’s a beach for sunbathing and bar sessions more than snorkelling
- The Giant Jesus statue (Tuong Chua Kito Vua) at the top of Nho Mountain is a 20-minute walk from Back Beach and worth the climb for the bay views
- Night food on the Back Beach streets is decent and cheap — bún tàu, bánh mì, and seafood BBQ spots run late
- Lockers are standard at reputable hostels; bring a padlock or check whether one is provided
