Things to do here

Nha Trang’s diving is the best in mainland Vietnam. The Hon Mun Marine Protected Area has the highest coral diversity on Vietnam’s coast, and the infrastructure for diving here — certified operators, equipment, and course delivery — is the most developed in the country.
Hon Mun Marine Protected Area
The marine reserve covers the waters around Hon Mun island and several adjacent reef systems. Protected since 2001, the reefs have recovered from previous damage. The diversity of coral species is genuinely high by Southeast Asian standards (not comparable to the Coral Triangle, but respectable).
Marine life: Moray eels, lionfish, scorpionfish, reef sharks (occasional), clownfish in anemone, sea turtles (less common), various nudibranchs, and extensive hard and soft coral coverage.
Visibility: Typically 5–15m depending on season and current. Best January–June. October–November sees reduced visibility from river run-off after rain.
Dive Sites
Madonna Rock (Hon Mun): The most popular dive site. A pinnacle covered in soft corals with fish life around the base. 5–25m depth range. Suitable for all levels.
Moray Beach: A sloping reef with multiple moray eels visible in the crevices. Suitable for beginners.
Manta Bommie: Occasional manta ray sightings. Requires appropriate conditions and some luck. Deeper dive.
Pinnacle (Hon Tai): A deeper site (15–30m) with good visibility and the best chance of larger pelagic species.
Dive Operators
Rainbow Divers: The longest-established and most recommended dive operator in Nha Trang. PADI Five Star facility. Multilingual instructors. Consistent safety standards. 2-dive boat trips: ₫700,000–1,200,000 ($28–48). PADI Open Water: ₫4,000,000–6,000,000 ($160–240).
Blue Diving Club: A smaller operator with good reviews. Less expensive than Rainbow Divers for experienced divers. 2-tank dives from ₫600,000 ($24).
Scuba World Divers: Another established operator with consistent reviews.
Snorkelling
Island hopping day trips include snorkelling stops at the reef areas around Hon Mun. Basic masks and fins provided. The snorkelling is good for seeing reef fish and moderate coral, though it doesn’t compare to the scuba experience of the deeper sites.
Snorkelling-focused day trip: ₫200,000–350,000 ($8–14) including equipment, boat, and lunch.
Conditions and seasons
Best months: January–June. Calm seas, reasonable visibility, and good weather for boat trips.
October–November: Worst conditions. Post-monsoon run-off reduces visibility. Some dive operators reduce their schedule. Rough seas on some days.
July–September: Viable. Some afternoon storms but morning dives usually run normally.
What to bring
Rash vest or wetsuit top (3mm) — the water is warm (26–29°C) but extended dives without protection can cause chill. Reef-safe sunscreen. Most operators provide wetsuits if requested.
